Thinking of you and hoping your weather is a vast improvement of ours here as it's vile out there.

It was very windy but dry (and f..f..frrreeeezzzzing!)
I am very disappointed with myself as I let my nerves get the better of me, Brave decided to prat about (because the others were) at the start and he started to stop at every jump and reverse... no reason to other than he was being a prat... but that set my nerves on edge as he started to bunny hop as well!
We did some really nice jumps but because I was on edge I was riding quite defensively and we had some really uncomfortable jumps too as a result, which meant my confidence started to sink deeper especially when it cam to jumping some of the bigger jumps (which being only 75cm are still well within our ability)
But as I approached a scary jump I could feel that I was backing off and dropping the contact and Brave takes so much of his confidence from me so he started stopping and running out, which just made the situation worse.
When I was happy with the fence he jumped it first time with no issues...
On the positive side we did have a great play in the water and dropped in and jumped out etc and we did some of the bigger jumps and not just a 60cm course.
Bottom line is that I need to keep going out a practicing over the little ones until they become second nature to me, simply so I can control my nerves. I was far worse schooling in company than at a competition on my own... I must be weird!

Sounds positive on the whole Fi. Is it self consciousness do you think? In a lesson you know all eyes are on you in terms of helping you and also learning from listening to the advice given whilst in a comp atmosphere everyone is full of their own concerns/tactics etc and not really analyzing you specifically.

Haffy - I don't think its self conciousness. Maybe the desire to do well and simply not living up to my own expectations...
I think it has more to do with the fact that I lost all confidence after Figaro died and Brave has gradually been bringing it back, but when he prats around I feel useless and that transmits to him so we spiral downhill. I think I am more focused at a competition which helps.
It probably also has a lot to do with the fact that all his life he has been in a private home, and not on a yard so that when he is out with horses he doesn't know in a non competitive environment as he has always been taken to shows its not something he is used to. We are very used to working on our own and not all all used to working with other horses so his attention (which is naturally one of a gnat) gets divided and if they mess around (which they were) then he thinks he should mess around too and his focus comes off me and onto everything else.
I also seem to a a metal block when it comes to spread fences, what really freaked me out was a tyre jump with a rail/huge solid log pole behind it, if it had just been the tyres I think I would have been fine, but the rail just did my head in... So today I have put up my filler of a brick wall in the arena and I will jump that a few times, then I will turn it into an oxer with a pole behind and jump that. I put the pole up when I built the fence this morning and didn't like it so definitely in my head!

So much in the thought not the deed! We are all guilty of over-thinking things, I know I do! He is a great little horse and the more you do the easier it will be. Other horses around are a huge deal to ours and how they cope. If he likes to work on his own might be worth seeing if you can hire early in the morning or have it to yourself sometime. Definitely build him up to big groups.
