I have decided to have a go at showing my little chap at a few local shows this year in-hand. Is it better to wear a waist-coat or tweed jacket? I am a little confused as to what to wear. I have a green tweed jacket which I think complements Apollo as he is chestnut. Also he rubbed his entire mane out last autumn although it has grown to a nice length now - do you think that we'll be marked down for not having a long mane? Any tips would also be greatly received!! lol

I used to show my elderly shetland in hand. As long as he is turned out natural [ie no trimming, feathers etc on] then you should be fine. You can wear either, I used to wear a jacket but other will wear waistcoats over a white shirt if it's warm. Don't forget to take a show cane with you and practise leading and trotting them up at home. Make sure he is going forwards, I used to get marked down as my shetland was not forward at trotting in hand. Don't forget to bath, use coat shine etc and conditioner in mane and tail so it's all silky and flowing. Also hoof gloss, make sure his feet are neat ie farrier and highlighter around the eyes and nostrils can be applied to show off his face.
Hope some of that helps. Goodluck!!

how do you travel your shetland to shows. I have a little coloured shetland and he gets sad when he sees ray going to shows and would love to take him with us, but not sure how to travel him?

I have a single ifor williams trailer that he travels in although I have taken out the bracing bars as he fit under and I think they would cause more problems with than without. I have also decided to cross-tie him now though as took for a little joy ride yesterday as he's not been boxed for a while as we have our first show this season next sunday and when we got back the little monkey was facing backwards think it would be safer for him! but when travelling with others in a double trailer I just travel him as I would a bigger pony. Hope this helps?!

My little loan shetland used to travel as a normal horse in a double trailer but she also would end up backwards or in the front bit!! She loved going to shows by the way. Was great fun to show her, she loved the outing and all the fuss.

We went to our first proper show today - (just yanked from the field and given a bath!!) We managed to get 3 seconds - I am quite chuffed with that although we were judged by the same judge for two of the classes and I don't think she liked me much!!!
