My sixth sense told me to put my body armour today when I decided to do some grid work with Brave, and boy am I glad I did! One of Brave's SJ quirks is that he likes to take off on a long stride and nose dive on the other, he has the scope that he usually clears what you point him at sometimes at what feels like the top of the wings. So I thought grid work would be ideal to get him thinking. So set up this grid.... First time through Brave did his usual and took off on a long stride causing me to loose a stirrup as I wasn't ready for it, which meant he jumped the second fence on a really awkward stride and nose dived between fences two and three, pulling me forward out of the saddle, que me loosing the other stirrup. By this point I am buried in his neck, unable to see where we were going as my face was literally in his mane beside his neck, I had no reins as I was two busy trying to sit upright and had my hands on his neck and no stirrups. ! He then proceeds to jump the last two fences in the grid, thank goodness he is honest enough to stay straight and look after his poor old mum and amazingly I stayed on... how I really don't know! The next few times through it gradually improved until we did it really nicely on both reins and then decided to call it quits on a good note

I have a couple of great bruises on my thigh from this.
I never thought i would manage a jump without stirrups let only two without stirrups or reins and effectively blindfolded, and then doing it again and again until we got it right... I actually feel quite proud of myself

So you should! They teach this a lot here: the teenagers often do jumping lessons without stirrups and then you go on to close your eyes too.....

I suppose I have never had a schoolmaster at jumping - I have had to teach every horse I have ever owned to jump from poles on the ground up if you know what I mean. As a result they have always been quite wibbly-wobbly and would quite happily duck out of a fence rather than jump it until straightness was established. So never had the confidence to jump with out stirrups but will do pole work bareback!
Plus I dont bounce as well as I once did! two more years and I'll be 40!
