Murphy has been coughing for a couple of days and this morning I noticed that he has a running nose and once again not at himself. I'm baffled to what it could be I steam his hay and give him 3 feeds of conditioning cubes throughout the day at regular intervals. He has been lying on a sawdust bed & shavings for approx 3 months without any issue so I don't think it could be that. He is out for most of the day and practically only stabled at night or he can shelter if wet etc. Casper had been coughing last week but after soaking his hay, this has left. Isn't there always something I've text the vet to see if he can call out.

DB - he could have a cold - they do get them, what colour is the fluid coming out of his nose, if its clear I never worry too much. But if it persists then would get the vet out
His immune system could be depressed following his colic episode, as it will take time for him to build back up. Now that his teeth are done is he eating better?

Its a bit thick and not clear. He's probably run down as you say but I had planned for the vet to come soon anyway to give Vacinations to the boys so probably better just to let him have a wee look.
He's been eating well Fi. About 3/4 days after getting his teech done he's been munching away and doesn't seem to be having any bothers.

Ditto Fi above- he will probably be prone to minor ails for a few months. Treat him like he's fragile for a bit, does he like guiness or stout? I think its something to do with the B vitamins but it seems to be one of these old fashioned remedies that do work!!! (could be a mental thing for the owner as well but horses do pick up on your feelings). Actually just on that, when you go into the stable, be positive, laugh and be playful, let him know he isnt an invalid- if you act like he is one he will pick up on it!

if he doesn't like stout then you could go into his stable drink it and come out giggling....

Well, I don't want to be alarmist but I'd be a bit anxious about another bout of 'not-well-ness' after his recent colic. Of course it is entirely possible he has just got a cold but I tend not to believe in coincidence. So I think you've done the right thing DB in getting the vet out again.

The vet has just left and administered antibiotics and ibropfen. She believes that we have just caught it before it turns to Pneumonia, so thats great. She thinks that as Murphy had similar symptoms last year that he will always be prone to this due to his age. Also due to his recent colic, his immune will be low for a while.
He's still eating well and is mostly in good spirits. I'm going to take him out in a bit for a little grass in-hand - that always makes him a bit perkier!

glad you caught it in time DB, sounds like his age is starting to catch up with him but at least he is eating better now and as you say a nibble in hand is always good. You could try giving him a probiotic supplement to help re-establish his good gut bacteria after all the antibiotics etc. I do this routinely now if the boys have to have antibiotics for any reason. at the best it actually helps at the worst it doesn't do any harm and it make me feel better.
