As you know one of my goals is to start to ride Novice tests this year, just wondering what else is required over prelim level in terms of movements.
I had a look on you tube at a couple of tests and it seems like there are simple changes and a bit more extension required but other than that they didn't appear much more difficult than prelim.

There is a shift in the degree of collection, whereas in prelim they are looking for the start of an outline, ie acceptance of the bit, tracking up, rhythm etc etc, in novice affiliated they want to see the horse lifting its front end more and using its shoulder to achieve the further lengthening etc. They also will criticise any tendency of tyhe horse to go on the forehand so any downhill tendency at all will be penalised. The whole thing should be more polished and professional. I would say when you are happily working at elementary at home then compete novice and so on. BUT and its a big BUT it does rather depend on the judge and what they prefer, they may be more lenient for a native type horse a lack of extension in lenthened strides, but they would hammer a WB for it. Unfortunately it is supposed to be objective but as with all types of horse event it is very subjective. Good luck Fi

My old yard owner now wins at novice, only moved up last year. Hers is a section D cross. Has a lovely extended trot mind.

I found that very interesting ie the change from Prelim to Novice - often wondered. I think you are right to go for it Fi, I am sure you and Brave have the ability and it is good to have something to aim for

Have a go!!! Really brave from me (totally crapped myself) but we managed a respectable score and it gave me a lot of confidence. If you are not sure about medium trot , for example, it only makes up a very small % of your score and you can make it up else where. Best of luck. X
