As you know, rugs are a newish thing for me. In a normal winter I put a rug on P at night and he is naked during the day as it warms up with the sun. But this 'not normal' period has me a bit confused. He is in a full neck heavyweight at night (it was -15 last night) and it is due to 'warm up' to -3 today. Should I change him out of his heavyweight? Yesterday I left him naked for a few hours as he seemed fine but should I put on a mediumweight? Or is it OK to leave him in the heavyweight or will he not feel the benefit at night?
I dunno ...... help please!

If he is used to being unrugged int he day i would change to a lighter day rug? mind you if it is cold but not windy or wet, he would probably be ok naked in the day? I wouldnt leave the heavyweight on all day though, he may get hot...
I always rug warmer at night and less int he day, but lots of people just leave the same one on...

Funnily enough I have same dilemma. Pete is normally naked or rain sheet in the day and naked or fleece at night. Just last night I left him in insulator and medium weight turnout over the top. He came in feeling warm, and it seemed mad to change him. Not sure what to use it's very cold!

I usually change the rugs during day (or at least detach the necks) - depends really as apart from last two nights the temps have hardly changed over night into the day this week sticking around the freezing mark

Our weather is a bit like yours haffy in that the temperature is pretty much the same at night as during the day. I've been leaving rugs on most days.

Thanks for that - I took your advice Ceej, and changed him into a the mediumweight, standard neck for the daytime. I think he would have been happy enough naked, as although cold it is dry and there is no wind, but I would have fretted ....

AS long as they dont chase around you can leave the heavyweight on if its going to stay cold or change into a lighter one if it warms up. The HW are great until the horse sweats underneath, as they take a bit to dry. Basil is in his MW premier equine one nearly all the time at the moment. I havent used the HW one this year as he is not shaved on his belly etc. He seems to be fine. Sam is in a LW but its a nasty cheap one that is already ripped so he will get a PE one when I can afford it. Just folding the necks back can make a huge difference. I know weve said it before but I still havent found a better rug than the PE ones, they seem to tick all the boxes and their is one for all situations.

I've just checked him now and he'll stay in the HW for now as it is perishing out! I'm reluctant to fold the neck back as there are trees in the paddocks and I know without doubt he'd go for a good old rub and tear the inside!
They are forecasting more snow today and then another minus a million overnight so it's not a bad idea to keep him dry I think ...?
