Hi everyone. Just wondering as the mucking out season now in full swing. Who deep litters, for how long? Who like big banks are they really necessary? Our stables are big so haven't done banks but wonder if they draught proof? I muck out every day but am contemplating just taking out poop and doing wet every three or four days. We use comfy bed, lovely stuff but quite heavy.

Mucking out season? I've been mucking out all year round!!! Can't complain too much though because we've been using the lovely Aquamax that is a doddle to clean out, doesn't smell and lasts for aaaaaages...although it is running rather low now so I fear we'll be back on smelly old straw pretty soon . Ah well, straw makes a big comfy bed that even I'd sleep in (as a matter of fact, I have on a few occasions ), even if it does stink!!! With regards to the banks - I haven't made massive banks with the Aquamax as Faith's stable is cleverly built and has sloping walls where banks should be so you don't really need them. It's also quite good at staying where you put it (so you don't end up with holes right through to the mats), but I'll be making big cosy banks with the straw because it tends to shuffle about as Faith wriggles and I don't want her bashing her legs on the brick wall. I also muck out every day. Apparently you can deep litter with Aquamax but I haven't because I just can't bring myself to leave it for days and then have to take 3 or 4 wheelbarrows to the muckheap...I'd rather do one a day and get it done with!

Well I'm not mucking out yet as neds still out. Having rubber matting fitted as we speak and they will be in for Christmas. I've not had mats before so will be trial and error for me the best way to work it. To start with I'm going to have big banks of clean shavings and work out how much I need in the middle. I don't normally have banks. I just can't see how they could help prevent a horse getting cast, unless you have huge stables and can make huge solid banks. Last year I would semi deep litter - all poo out during the week and then full muck out at the weekend. Eddie seemed to stay a lot cleaner with a thicker bed. But may give wood pellets a go this year with the matting.

I usually use hemp bedding and deep litter it with banks for Murphy. Its usually quite good but I've noticed with all the wet and windy weather I've been leaving the stable door open for the boys during the day. Its getting very difficult to get hemp bedding here too so I'm not sure I'll even get it again.
Casper uses sawdust and I bank it but I'm going through quite alot of it atm but as its only about £2 a bag its not so hard on the pockets.
In the new year I'm thinking of getting rubber matting but I suppose it all depends on the cost.
