This morning at 3.30 am I was woken by the most horrendous screeching sound. Heard the cat thundering around in the spare room and was clear she’s bought in a live one. But what the hell was it? I’ve not heard anything make a noise like this before – even my next door neighbours heard it!! (Neil stayed fast asleep lol – bloomin useless men!!)
So anyway I don dressing gown and enter the spare room. Jemimah staring at the carpet cleaner hoover thing, screeching coming from same area. Thoughts are going through my head as whatever it is is under the carpet cleaner, so too small to be a rabbit (they can make some noise – they were Stretches favourite!!) far too loud for the usual mouse or bird, baby hedgehog maybe? Cautiously (I admit I was a little scared lol) I lifted up one side of the hoover and peeked underneath. Nothing but the screaming got louder and quicker. Pulled the whole hoover to one side...nothing. Jemimah makes a run for the radiator (which is behind the hoover) and all of a sudden I see a tail flash out of the side. OMG it’s a rat!!! Now I used to have pet rats so I’m not ‘scared’ as such of them, but I have also been bitten by a wild rat (hand under a rabbit cage, long story!!) and it wasn’t pleasant. Next thing I see its little head poke out at me and screams at me some more! ‘Shuddup’ I growled – and it did!! Good rat. Bloomin thing had lodged itself in the middle of the radiator. So I plodded downstairs to try and find something to entrap the beasty in. Elected for a jug which we very rarely use!! Plod back upstairs, cat is egging me on ‘get it mum, get it’ while waiting for me to dislodge it she could give chase again. So I shove the jug in the corner and with a dressing gown covered hand tried to shove the rat in the right direction. Eventually it got the idea and slithered into the safety area. Covered the jug with my (still dressing gown covered) hand and took it downstairs. Cat still thought it was in the radiator so didn’t follow me. Peeked inside to check for signs of blood or damage to Mrs rat, satisfied that it looked unscathed, opened the back door and deposited her outside. I know it was a ‘she’ as when she made her escape she waddled off over the gravel, very clearly ‘with babies!!’
So yes I’m soft for letting the vermin go, and even better she’s going to produce lots of new playthings for my cat to bring in!!
And Jemimah? When I left for the horses 3 hours later she was still sat by the radiator waiting for the rat to show itself!
