Princess has got this weird habit of groaning and snorting when she is being ridden - asked instructor and she thinks it might be cos she is relaxed. When she trots its sort of like she groans to the beat if the trot. She only does this sometimes.
She also gets this allergy thing on her back legs. Its on the vet report and we thought it might have been mud fever cos it was Feb when we got her, but its come back now and there is no mud to speak of! hehe
We cleared it up(last time) with washing it and putting wound powder and mite ointment stuff on it. They are wee scab things and they must be itching her because she will stamp her back legs sometimes - wasnt so bad in the softer ground but now the ground is like concrete afraid of concussion etc.

My pony grunts and snorts when I work him. He only does it because he excited collecting up. If you've seen the tennis players when they play, when they hit the ball they groan so I think its the same thing in horses when they are working properly. I don't know about the backs legs but maybe a allergy to a certain plant in the feild? Lizzie

can stilll be mud fever in summer! sox gets scabs behind her front knees from mud fever even though mud never touches this far up, and she doesnt get it on her heels. keep brushing them gently and was them with baby shampoo every so often (i know ur not meant to with mud fever but i find it does help, if on a dry day and left to dry outside)

My horse stamps his back legs and scratches his back legs on his manger. I got the vet and was prescibed frontline spray to apply after clipping his feathers off and bathing them in hibi scrub. He had the same problem a few weeks ago and I did as before and he's fine now.

Its not snorting like you see when some horses snort to the beat of the canter - she groans and then sort of blows her nose (sometimes)

Don't worry fleabitten, both mine tend to do it this time of year, you have described it exactly I think its just clearing the nose and airways of dust or pollen. So long as the performance isn't affected I wouldn't worry.
