Pete still out at the mo but when they come in at night, hopefully not til next month at the soonest, I have decided to feed only haylage. The cough I thought I would always have to put up with has now gone completely ;D but only fed him on haylage at the end of last winter for the first time. My main question is how important is it to stick to one type. I have used horsehage blue which is the most expensive. Also going to try local feed merchants own brand a pound cheaper a bale. Any thoughts?

My YO makes his own hay and haylage which is included in our livery. I can't comment on the individual wrapped bales but i would go for the 1 with the lowest KJ/Kg energy levels. Its very difficult to assess nutrient content from farm bales. I have fed only haylage to AJ for the last 4 years and he does really well on farm bales and I haven't had any problems and bales vary quite dramatically depending which field they were cut from. x

We feed haylage and Zara is quite right it varies from field to field and the time it's cut, this has never caused a problem for our horses. 1st cut tends to be more "stalky", 2nd cut more "leafy" (and more fattening)
