Anyone know any good ones? Are there any negative side effects of giving a horse licks? Obviously she'll not be getting the ones with molasses in [laminitic] and I've read that we should avoid licks that aren't specifically for equines and ones with added selenium (because horses can apparently overdose on it), but other than that I've got no idea what I'm looking for! Any ideas? She doesn't seem to like ones that need a holder on the wall...she's currently got one like this tied up in her stable ( mybreyerhorses.com/SALT-LICK-HIMALAYAN-ROCK-MED/M/B001CCZON8.htm ) and she loves it...I'm getting her a bigger one 'cos she's gone through the small one already.

Eddie wouldn't touch any form of salt or mineral lick - until I got one like yours a couple of weeks ago and she absolutely loves it. They all do. Don't know of any negatives though someone may. I think they're a good way of allowing the horse to decide if they need it or not. Funnily enough I have noticed that in the last week they've moved onto better grazing and not been as interested in the lick so must be getting what they need from the grass.

I would just give her a salt lick. Why do you want to give her a lick? Only negatives i can think of is with the ones with molasses - maybe they would lick too much of it.
Dont think horses really need licks or balancers - what did they do years ago? Just chuck her a salt lick and she will be grand ;D

She's got a salt lick and she loves it! And it's her enthusiasm with it that's made me wonder if she's missing out on anything else...like Scatty, I think salt licks are a great way of letting a horse choose what they need, but with how much Faith is licking her salt lick, I'm just a bit concerned that she might also be wanting some extra 'something'. She has her muzzle on in the field, has only a tiny amount of food (Happy Hoof) and then has her hay soaked to within an inch of it's life - I'd just like to make sure she's not missing out on anything vital really. If you all think she'll be fine with just the salt lick then I'll leave it at that, I just wondered if there were any molasses-free mineral licks that she could try (or leave if she doesn't need it)? Glad to hear no one so far knows of any side effects

You could always give her a general purpose supplement in her Happy Hoof. Pink Powders very good or NAF do a multi vit supplement which is very good value and lasts ages.

if she is laminitic and on reduced grass she will likely be lacking in magnesium. I fed Harry Mollichaff Hoofkind with extra magnesium (most laminitic foods have this added, plus Biotin) and chose a lick with magnesium in it - there is a lick for laminitics but it was about £12 rather than £3 for a normal one with not much extra in it! so check the ingredients to see if there really is much different in it...the one I gave Harry had magnesium in it as standard (obvioulsy those rock salt licks dont). It may be worth adding a supplement - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HERBAL-SLIM-laminitis-weight-magnesium-yea-sacc-/270792302688?pt=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item3f0c7aa060eg with the standard stuff reduced pasture misses out on. I can also recommend NAF general Purpose Supplement...

You may be better off just using a supplement as recommended by Ceej/Scatty or even a maintanence level of balancer like Blue Chip or Equilibra (sp). Mine have a variaty of licks but only really use the molassed ones in all honesty...although the one I use is a multi purpose one designed for horses at grass so maybe it just gives them all they need. I can understand why you don't want to risk molassed licks but I use these by Rumenco, who make cattle/sheep licks and they are literally almost half the price of horselyx with the advantage of proven less molasses than cooked licks contain... click hereI have also used this in the past, but find them hard to source locally as the tack shop that did have them no longer does whilst CWG sells the Supalyx and they have been on offer at just £10 something for the pink ones so I stocked up! This one is suitable for lamantics I found they didn't use it as regulary as they do the molassed ones but after a short while they settle down if they have regular access and just take what they need with the molassed ones anyhow.
