the last two rides ive had on frank hes been headshaking and today he was awful, ive noticed him do this with flies very occasinally in the past summer but today it was constant and he got so wound up he reared when i was trying to make him stand still this is so out of character, he feels fine in all other ways and when he was in his dark stableit stopped. i am going to speak tot he vet of course but was just looking for anyone experiences of this. He has also shown some nasal discharge of recent and snorts when out riding and in field, its white/clear discharge which looks healthy in colour but just runs down his nostril. i wonder if he has an allergy to pollen and also fly issues? flys were awful today and yesterday. annax

Flies were terrible today, i've just got back from riding and they are still out in force, far worse than of late. murph shakes his head a fair bit when they are really bad in irritation but I find he does it less if he wears ear nets. I already use nosenets so can't really comment if they help or not...
I've heard of a lot of people suffering hayfever who don't normally this year which is something pollen related and different to norm (i assume our dry summer to date has caused it?) if it affects people theres a good chance it could be affecting the horses/other animals too.
Hope you find an answer.

See rose shackes but I can't find a reason cause I have tried both ear and nose nets and she still does it. It gets annoying. Sorry that's not very helpful!

FM you could try a nose net to see if that stops the pollen. I think Equilibrium do a fly and nose mask which you can ride in - might be worth a go.

Basil gets really wound up with the flies- I dont ride him if it is really bad as he gets frantic- especially those ones that blood suck, he nearly knocked me over in field this morning he was so desperate to get one off his neck- think he forgot Im not a horse! The thin skinned horses really suffer with them, they do seem really bad at moment. His head shaking could just be agitation but think you do right to run it past the vet.

We've had a a plague of small flies and it does sound similar. (Our have now mostly gone though , replaced by taons, horseflies that are more than an inch long and boy! do they bite!)
I always use a little crochet ear bonnet on P when I ride him - having made sure there are no flies in his ears before I put it on as they do like to feed in there - yuk). In the field he wears a full face mask but is pretty good at taking this off when he feels like it!
Vaseline in the ears works well though - the flies can't get a purchase and it also forms a barrier so the horse doesn't feel them. Just a thick smear inside the sticky up part of the ear, obviously not DOWN it.

Im glad you posted that as I used to do that years ago with the vaseline and forgot about it! It does work a treat!
