Im sort of going to answer my own question here as Ive asked a few people already, but Ive decided the little boy can do some lead rein classes on Frankie once he gets going with his riding. Now I detest showing with a passion but as he has just declined to continue with gymnastics I would like him to do something rather than just get absorbed in Disney Junior and the WII!
So, the consensus of opinion on this is split but the two people whom I respect the most have said that Frankie should be shown natural, which will take some time as his mane and tail were 'banged' for the sales.
Ive seen planty of little welshies trimmed and plaited up and I actually prefer this but what do others think. I think the Sec B's look fantastic all plaited and trimmed but not sure about the A's

I have been looking at this for Brave recently as he is entering a working pony class and a welsh in hand class
What I have decided is that his mane and tail are trimmed and tidied but mane left at about 6" long. one single plait behind the ear which acts as a bridle path.

I don't think it matters a stitch if your doing local level and if your doing county will obviously depend on the class - if it's a M&M LR then obviously natural but a BSPS class I *think* plaited would be more correct turnout- not sure if natives can be left unplaited in these are not can't recall ever seeing one 'au natural'.
An old yard I was on owners daughter had a sec A. They compete a mixture of local stuff and some agricultural/county in the surrounding areas, Bakewell being about the biggest they do/did. They kept the mane thin and about 6/7 inches long and a full tail...they showed natural in M and M classes and it was thin/short enough to do lots of thin plaits to compete in non M&M classes and always looked very smart turned out plaited. This was quite a while ago now but they did exactly the same later with her little sec c and more recently with a connemara who does M&M and also BSPS working hunters.

Sorry in late here. Yup the beauty of a Welsh - no plaiting! i just tidied Eddies mane so it was level and removed all the 'pubes' that sprout around her hind legs and chest.
