Took Harry out for first ride after illness tonight - just walking and not far - half mile up the road then up a lane to a field and back. When we got to the field the sun was shining and Harry just stopped to look at the view (which is hilly and lots of fields, very nice) It was deadly quiet except the birds singing and it occured to me how special it is as I sat there for quite a while - just you and your horse in the countryside with no-one around - sitting on a live animal. Amazing. I felt incredibly lucky.

Isn't it just the best feeling. I have a favourite place on a summers day there is a really high hill which you can see for literally miles - I can see aircraft hangers which are about 15 miles away. Its so peaceful. Fabulous news that Harry is out and about again. Will his illness have any long term effects or is he totally better now?

well his blood results showed that the infection was gone but he is a little aneamic (sp?) which could be nothing, could be something (there is a small chance some form of cancer caused the peritonitis and cancer can also cause aneamia which is a little worrrying) however, it could just have been due to the infection too. The vet thinks that as it was caught so early and treated so agressively the chance of long term damage is slight (its caused by the body throwing too many white blood cells in to fight the infection and causing the bowls to fuse to the stomach wall) but his body probably didnt need to do that.
If he stays infection free, it can be put down to who knows what! but if he gets it again then there would be a reason for it and then I would be back to difficult decision making (actually no I wouldnt, i already know what I would have to do) so its wait and see really....
So I am just taking it very easy with him - if he doesnt seem himself after a month (and he usually gets more energetic when worked) then I can have more blood tests to see if he is still aneamic (it was only slightly though so vet is confident its only 'transient' as she said!) He's such a fighter bless him. x

What a lovely thing to read . I'm glad Harry is feeling better and fingers crossed he stays better! Bet it felt amazing to be back out with him. Faith does the 'let's stop and look at the view' thing too - she does it every time we leave the yard as we go straight out onto a crop field with a bridleway running down the edge and the valley falls away to the right and you can see all the trees and other fields and...ahhh...you can't help but feel relaxed. The last time we rode (just over 3 weeks ago, day after I fell off) it was a crisp frosty morning with the sun shining and the mist over the fields was just lifting. We went for a gentle stroll first thing, about 7:15am, and like your hack, there was no one else around, just me, Faith, the birds, a few hares, and a pheasant (which Faith chased ) and it was such a special hack. Even though we didn't go far or really do much, that bit of time just me and my pony felt amazing. No better feeling in the world

I am so glad Harry is better. Theres really no better feeling is there, Savvy has had 8 months off due to work, college and my illnesses. I got on her the other day with just a headcollar and two lead reins and my hat and took a wander up the hill where we can see most of the town and the sea and we were there for a good 15 minutes just taking it in. I have been in a much better mood since then and am more motivated to do stuff.

Amazing to read when you were forced to consider the worst option... but he is such a fighter, take it easy the apir of you and dont rush things, but I love that feeling of being at peace with the world.

This is just the sort of happiness that owning a horse is all about! (In between the worry and the cash crises....... ) I'm so glad you took time to just enjoy the moment. It frustrates me that so many people don't!
