On Saturday we went to an indoor Trec training day. What good fun we had. And Eddie was fab. There was 5 of us and in a small indoor school so I thought she might get a bit excited but she was brilliant and didn’t get het up at all. We started off just walking round the school looking at some of the obstacles, walking over tarp and carpet and things – no problem with those. The first practice was a narrow corridor, poles literally only a couple of feet apart which we had to walk, trot and then canter between without getting a foot outside. We got a ten for that with no problems. Then we did the low branches – two poles balanced lightly over a stand which we had to again walk, then trot under without knocking. We got brave here and decided to try in canter and made it under – al lot more difficult as you naturally move up and down so have to keep really squashed down and still. Then was the S-bend. Had a bit of trouble with this one and I kept turning too early – not only did we knock a pole, Ed managed to stand on one and break it – oops!! So practiced a few more times and were soon doing it like pro’s. We did bending through cones which you only had a narrow corridor on either side to remain between – easy in walk and trot but you have to have a very controlled canter to stay inside the markers. Then there was the maypole – a lunge line attached to a swivel clip which you have to pick up, walk around in a circle without allowing it to touch the floor and then hook it back up again – this was our achillies heel! We were fine with the walking round part but picking it up and dropping it off wasn’t happening! Everytinme I leant over to get it Eddie would turn to face the pole. So practice needed there.
We then went to do our controlled paces, which I thought may be a bit poor given that Eddie tends to only have one canter and that’s fast, fast or fast! So remembering my dressage I held my tummy in, kept as collected as possible and we surprisingly managed an 8 out of 10! Actually our walk was far worse and we only scored a 3. But she didn’t break pace which was good.
All in all a really fun day. Theres a competition in May which we'e hoping to go to
