I rang the vets this morning as I said and he said he better take a look. Pete is fine, but we are pretty sure he can no longer tolerate hay in his diet. He had some on Friday and Saturday night for the first time in ages. We think that was the trigger for the breathlessness. At least I know now and can keep him on haylage for ever. Will have to start stock piling for winter unless i can persuade my friend to share round bales. Barney is not such a good doer on hay, could be great for him too.

Poor Pete but at least you know now what the problem most likely is and it's easily remedied

Its a nuisance but at least you know what's wrong with him. I think you are planning to keep him out full time in the summer (am I right?) and if so, nothing to worry about for a while. Hope he will be full of beans again now that he has caused another vet visit!! I am missing your hacking posts

Good news he's got the green light. And now you know you can deal with it.

Is there nowhere that does small bale haylage near you Sol? Im going to have the same problem soon, mine coughs on hay so I will either have to steam or source small bales.

I do buy small bale at £7 a bale its the Devon High fibre stuff. He absolutely loves it! A bale lasts three and a half days, no worse than hay but so expensive.
