Went to the working hunter competition today. Was on a 15.2hh brown gelding, S. It was very busy, didnt expect there to be so many people - lots of horseboxes and people and horses about the place and he was very agitated and worried and figety, he wouldnt stand still for a minute and was getting quite wound up.
I was sharing him with another girl and we entered for the 55cm class, got our numbers and walked the course which was set up in the outdoor arena.
The first class was due to start at 1pm which was the lead rein class and after it was a crosspole class and then the 55cm. We ended up being ready far too early and we had to hang about for ages after I had warmed up, walking S about as he was too agitated to stand and it was quite cold in the wind.
It ended up it was a few hours before our class started so we ended up just getting off and leading him around in hand. He seemed a lot calmer when i took him down to the indoor as it was quiet down there and he stood quietly and relaxed.
Looking back, we would have been better just getting him all groomed and plaited and then waiting until the class before ours and then tacking him up and warming up as it would have saved a lot of hanging around. Normally we are rushing and running late!
Anyway, I was the first to go which was good as it meant i didnt have to hang around outside the gate. Halted and saluted in front of the judge, then went off, practically got walk to canter lol but it was a nice collected canter.
First fence was a plain rustic spread, fence 2 a rustic upright, fence 3 was an upright with a filler, fence 4 was a rustic spread, fence 5 rustic upright, fence 6 was white planks, fence 7 was a rustic spread, fence 8 was an upright with filler. He was quite forward, think I was leaning forward an awful lot, had to keep checking him in between fences but for the most part i was able to keep the canter around the whole course. Then halted and started my individual show - this was a bit of a shambles as i was making it up as I went along - wasnt too bad though, think i got the canter leads and all ok.
Really enjoyed it
There was someone taking photos so hopefully I will be able to get a photo or two to show you all soon!
At the prizegiving, I got 3rd in the horse section, so i now have a nice yellow rosette! There was 6 in the horse section and there was also about 10 ponies in the class as well.
Got S all nice and settled, bet he was glad to be back in his stable, im sure he was quite tired after all his stressing out and jumping!
Decided not to do the next class up as there was too many people and it was about 4pm by the time the 3rd class was over, i was knackered, im sure S was too, and the 65cm jumps looked quite big ( ).
Will update with photos hopefully soon
