Since moving to new yard, about five weeks now, I have been determined to hack out on our own once a week. Sometimes it's more pleasurable than others. We set off today in the beautiful sunshine to just go 'round the block' I have to go back to work in a minute. Anyway we have to go over a railway bridge as we set off, not Pete's favorite place, no idea why. Today, there was a man sitting on the bridge dangling his legs over the edge! I think Pete thought he was going to jump cue one massive spook and a 180' turn on one hoof! After that, he just jogged and snorted, not a lot of fun but at least we went out. Kind man got off the wall by the way or I don't think I would have got him past!

LOL that would have been enough to freak out Paco too! But funnily enough, I had one of those scary hacks on Saturday. I don't really like riding solo at the w/e because there are too any joggers/cyclists/bikers/hunters/odd men about. But it was such a beautiful day that P and I went for a gentle plod (keeping to our fitness regime).
We were good until near a neighbour's farm when suddenly P went ape. He is normally so calm, but he was very seriously spooked by something, even though I could see nothing. I can only imagine he smelt wild boar down by the stream, which is in light cover. Anyway, he was not stopping to find out!
He was horrendous! He was dying to stand up and flee so I put him into a brisk trot, seriously hard to control as he wanted to run away big time. And all the time I was thinking about the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail and singing to myself: Brave Sir Paco ran away, he ran away, ran away ..... (sorry you young people will have no idea what I'm talking about...)
Even putting him up some serious slopes did not calm him and he was desperate to look over his shoulder all the time. After the best part of an hour I did the only sensible thing and turned for home and made him go up the 'grande montée' - a very very steep hill where he had to climb up with me on board.
That calmed him down ... but only a bit!
Horses, eh?

Dont know the film but it sounds a good song:-) I think our horses like to keep us on our toes and prevent us coming complacent. They know just when we need a good adrenalin boost;-) Still, I am quite envious of both you and Racaille, Sol as I have not been riding is soooo long and my hacking is abysmal but hope you both have better times next time out.

Sol, that sounds frightening. I really think that you are doing great, even thinking of going out on your own (and in a new place) is just fantastic. I love to hear about all your little adventures - just wish I could be joining in on the fun
