I have had my body protector for almost 7 years now and its a short backed airowear one but the cover is in tatters. At the bottom of the back the whole cover has worn away and the foam sticks out and the elasticated clip that goes around the middle is useless as its so saggy. Anyhoo, am a bit skint at the moment and was thinking of seeing if i could get a new cover made or something, rather than buying a whole new body protector. I mean, its just foam. It would be difficult i think to get it done, my auntie does a bit of dressmaking so perhaps she could help with the more trickier parts. I want to wear it for my BHS exam and it would look ridiculous if i came along with a torn cover - you know what they are like about neatness as well. Do you think it can be done or would i be safer just getting a new body protector?

I'm sure it can be done Flea; at least it shows that it has been worn - mine looks brand new as it has barely ever left the house let alone protected my body lol Zx

I agree that it is probably possible to tart it up, but is it wise? I think you are meant to upgrade body protectors quite often plus if your body protector is 7 years old, you must be too big for it now (you are 15 or 16 I think?) So broke or not, I think it is time to get a new one. (mind you this excellent advice is being given by a hyrocrite as mine is even older and never worn but it is still good advice)

zara - i usually wear it every time i ride. duckles - yeah i have heard you are supposed to replace it every 4 or 5 years. funnily enough, i would have thought i have outgrown it (i'm 18 in a few months!) but it still fits me comfortably and sometimes, depending on the saddle, will hit off the back of it. i thought it was quite strange that it still fitted me lol! i think i would have saved up for a new one if i wasnt doing the BHS but i suppose this is sort of a temporary thing, fixing the cover. unless i just fixed the cover and then started saving up after the BHS exam?

i would be inclined to agree with duckles re getting a new one completely but in the meantime if you want a temporary fix you can get the lycra covers that go over the top of the original covers, they are a tad on the expensive side for what they are but they might do the job, hang on one sec and i will find a link www.rideaway.co.uk/airowear-elite-colour-swap/default.aspx

I think those wee yokes are only the coloured parts of that body protector - i.e. its not a whole new cover its just the wee coloury bit on the BP.
Ive seen them before. Pity really. I think if companies just made new covers to put on your BP then they would never get any new BPs sold as people would just buy a new cover!

That looks like some pretty nice stuff DB, although I'm a bit wary of anything second hand that should be a form of protection (BPs, hats etc) as all it would take is one previous fall and they might have been broken/damaged and then wouldn't protect me if I fell off...still, thast jacket sounds quite nice . Bit random that they've got a mixture of Full and Pony sized things though!

hey those BPs are a good bargain! thanks DB my sis has a BP which is in good nick which i could try but mine is a short backed one so im afraid it might be too long. which is why im thinking of just re-covering it.
