We have much mud. Especially around the gateway to the field. One of the other liveries says this is one of the reasons she leaves hers out overnight occasionally so they don't go through the worst of it. we put tape across by the gate so they can't sink! Not sure this would help that much. It's starting to become an issue though getting them to go out, they hate walking through it! Especially the cob.  |

i hate mud and our gateways are bad too. The only time Aj has refused to walk through mud was when he had very sore pasterns from mud fever; stupid question but have you checked heels and legs? If all ok may be worth considering turnout boots Zx

Can't you buy matting to put down in gateways? I know it's another expense .....

....or get the owner to put some hardcore down although this often just sends the problem a little further away from the gate in practise

I have type 1 material in all my gateways and after a year or so the grass grows through it, worst is about an inch of much on the top but you never sink too far...
but there is not much you can really do about it as its not your yard.

Is it that rubber matting type stuf with holes in to let the grass grow through but also provide traction and stop people from sinking?

No, type 1 material - is a technical term that builders merchants use - its hardcore of a certain size, its quite big stones that dont seem to get picked up in their feet and it allows the grass to grow through rather than some of the small hardcore material
