Ok so I am moving yards, hooray! I will be allowed to choose my own bedding. have recently taken Pete's rubber mats out of his stable as urine was trapped under them I still have them though. He is generally not a very wet horse, I did have him on megazorb on the mats which was ok. What does everyone else do\recommend. I like to see the floor and dry it every day which puts me off things that are supposed to be left like aubiose. However I have read many good things about it and would happily use it if its a better bed than shavings. He eats straw! It's a huge stable potentially if I get the one I ask for. ;D

I haven't had a stabled horse (bar odd spells of ilness when I've had to bed down in shelter) for some time now and haven't really come across all these new bedding (H uses easibed for her hens if that counts!) but I always preffered straw to shavings/paper. Not easy if the horse eats it I know and dust etc but it's economical, easy to muck out, warm and looks nice!
Also big stable requires a lot of bedding initially (speaking from experience here!) We had to put 20 bags of shavings in Sunny's when we first got him, when we switched onto straw 4 bales did the same area.
Could you partially rubber mat the stable then you could economise on the bedding in places...ie if you like the floor to dry out then you could mat the front for his hay/water and leave the back...my friend A does this as Ads is a mega mega piss pot and the mats can't cope with it as they stopped some of the natural drainage towards the back of the stables occuring. The rest of the people on the yard who use mats do the revesrse and just mat the back under the bedding mainly because the boxes are so large and fully matting would cost a small fortune.

I don't have mats and am still using shavings. I can't afford a bulk load of pellets and suppliers are not doing aubiose anymore. Next year I may switch. But I have found with shavings that keeping the bed really thick keeps it much cleaner. I only take out the wet once a week and only need to put one bale in. My beds getting thicker by the week. This is working quite well now and it stays nice and clean and dry.

Aquamax is fab! Expensive initially as you buy in bulk but we bought 80 bags (1 tonne) and that lasts us just over a year. Wouldn't use anything else by choice (although we may be on a mix of aquamax base and straw banks soon as we're moving and straw is free , but that's for another thread)

ive heaerd of a new bedding today called miscanthus (elephant grass) thats suppose to be good need to read up bout it though. Roise is on matting and shavings but only a little bit of shavigns to catch pee if she does go on there. Her stable 15 x 12 so have matting in the corner and cause it is big she just goes on the concrete havnt had to put anymore shavings in now for 4days. Much better from the horrible mess she used to churn up whe her bed was by her hay.
