We usually go camping every year with a group of people and we go to places around N.I. The past few years the idea has been to do a foreign camping holiday. So i am going to look into it this year - the places we have had in mind are south of france and italy. Anyone got any recommendations of best place to go for this sort of a holiday and also where do you think would be cheapest? Any ideas for anything welcome!

What about coming over here. Some great camping in England. The Lake District, New Forest, Norfolk Coast and Weymouth have all been great holiday venues for me.

Love Italy myself but never heard of anyone camping there. Heard loads of brilliant reports about French camping sites which are meant to be first class. I think Scatty has a good point about England though I would find out which county has the best weather! (I am a sun lover). Judging from Sol riding more than the rest of us I would guess Hampshire to be good. Plus you can take your dogs to England (I suppose?) Lucky you planning holidays already. I think this is going to be another year of stay at home for me. (Blooming recession)

much prefer the italians to the french!!! Know what you mean! The weather down here is at least reliable (even if there are French about LOL ) but nothing down here is cheap, I'm afraid. Personally, I loathe the Cote d'Azur as it is so built up and crowded but my teenager spent a week with friends camping at the 'biggest campsite in Europe' at Bormes Les Mimosas (http://www.campdudomaine.com/) and had a wild time - there are discos etc if you're into that sort of thing (clearly I'm not, being a million years old). I prefer quieter places - the Cote Bleue ... or inland somewhere stunning like the Ardeche. I've had some fun in Italy but find the sites are a bit hit and miss. I recommend you buy yourselves a Rough Guide to the country of your choice - they really tell it as it is.

do you think it would be better to go through a travel agent or look it up myself?

Flea - go to a book shop and buy the Rough Guide to Italy or Rough Guide to France. They cost about a tenner each but are a really good guide to getting around/staying/things to see and do. They will have campsites listed and you can deal with them direct or through t'interweb. Think travel agents are a bit surplus to requirements nowadays ......
One word or advice though, if you are thinking of travelling in August, make sure you book a campsite in advance. The Latins take August off and everywhere gets really busy. You'd have a quieter time in July (although kids are on holiday here).
