Having watched a few videos of myself riding I am sick of seeing myself tipping forward in trot and canter. I have always done it, so frustrating! I try to think of shoulders back head up like there is a string pulling me up. Have tried the whip behind my back through the elbows, that just gave me blisters! If I think about it too much I start to hollow my back It is so difficult. I see people riding now and am envious of their straight backs! Help, tips anything please. I would love a lesson on the lunge without stirrups but, not possible at the moment. That might help. Any other ideas folks?

One instructor told me to think about how I sit when I'm driving, so it feels as if I am leaning backwards a bit. This apparently sits you up straight. Another told me to think of an airoplane taking off. Hope that helps a bit.

got a really good tip off denise - pretend you are a top show rider! chin up - pretend you are a snob lol always look round at where you are going. it makes such a difference, shoulders wide. it feels silly but it looks really good and correct

Do you think that your tipping comes from your hips, stomach, upper back or shoulders? Try and isolate in your mind. A lot of people tip forward from their middle so that keeping the shoulders back doesn't really help. I think even thinking about engaging the core muscles is helpful and obviously they become stronger with use. If tipping from the hips (which I doubt), lunge lessons would be the best help or any exercise to deepen seat. If from the upper back or shoulders, (which was my bugbear) the strenghtened core will have a knock on affect as you absorb the movement better. It helps keep the shoulders over the hips. I am no expert Solomon but I find analysing where the problem is helps me. Plus, you probably are being a bit hard on yourself-

Sol I have exactly the same problem. Last lesson I had (seems ages ago now) I discussed it with Jo so we did lunge with no stirrups. I think for me it's a balance issue - after doing it for so long I feel unsteady when sitting 'correctly'. Also it's a bit of a reflex action when Eddie gets fiesty - Pete can be a little forward too if I remember right? I have found if I concenrate on keeping my shoulders back that lifts my whole body and straightens me. I have to constantly tell mysef as as soon as I work on something else they slouch again.

Try to correct it from your seat up- think of tipping your pelvis forward and up and this will automatically bring your belly forward, your chest up and open, think of the chin coming up softly and the weight of your head going down the back of your neck and spine.

Thanks Maxie, I have slipped into this too and your advice worked a treat! Amazing what a difference sitting correctly in better balance made to Murph's way of going too, much more forward/co-operative.
