all the horses you see doing endurance are arabs - I can understand why, but do any other horses make good enduro ones?

I did it on my TB/welsh but they come in all shapes in sizes. Years ago there was a haffy who went quite far so there is hope for Harry yet.
Arabs are probably the best naturally equipped equines, so a favourite choice and far outweigh other breeds competing at international level, but it is quite surprising when you look at the breeding of some of the top horses as they are a real mix matched bunch with all sorts of bloodlines.
Re fitness...it is surprising how easy it is to maintain fitness once they are fighting fit.....I use to do an hour or so 5 days a week and then several days off after an event then start up again.

check out EnduranceGB website and there is a site map, go on there and find your local group. most rides have a pleasure ride or training ride, as they are someimes called. they arent competitive. you can buy a one day pass to try a competitive one if you want. they arent as scary as you may think. a graded ride is nearly the same as a training/pleasure ride in which you have to complete the ride in a minimum and maximum time and you get grades for how well your horse has done. these grades range from elmination, completion, grades 4 - 1 (the best). these are given for your horses pulse rate etc. hope this helps or have i made it more confusing?! ;D

Im wanting to have a go with my girl, conny x tb who has an unlimited reserve of endurance and speed! Im just not sure where to begin tbh, most of the rides around me are competitive, and id want to do a pleasure ride first time out... i found these endurance events that have a training/pleasure ride attached. dont know if they are near you Cleeve Hill Ride 18th May 2008 The Cleeve Hill Training Ride is a delightful ride over Cleeve Common near Cheltenham, with minimal roadwork and excellent going. If you are new to endurance, why not come along and chat to EGB members who will be on hand to answer questions about endurance riding generally and EGB in particular. Organiser Margro Barry Greenacres Gare, Oaksey, Malmesbury SN16 9TL 01666 577633 £10 (EGB members) or £15 (non members - this includes EGB day membership - and £5 off the EGB joining fee if you subsequently join). Cirencester Park - National EGB Ride June 20/21/22nd 2008 The summer Solstice ride, organised by Heart of England Group, in Cirencester Park A major ride with many classes ranging from an 160k ER down to a 16km NCR (pleasure ride) over a choice of 3 days.

im doing endurance for my specialist project at college and there are lots of different breds that are goos for it. Yes arabs are the main ones cause they have the stamina, but there are also Thoroughbreds, american saddlebreds, salle francais, throughbred x welsh cob lots of native breeds the list is quite endless really.

If you're heading towards endurance you could train on Trec. It's not the same, of course, because on Trec you compete against a bogey time and it's not necessarily fast, but the sport does foster stamina. The last one I did was 20km of hard terrain followed by the tests. My vet (swoon) doesn't like endurance. I don't know enough about it to have a valid opinion. Enlighten me! ;D

standardbreds are in my opinion the best horses for the job - then again im biased ive had em all my life. ex racers are superb and have excellent stanima and speed. I have a half bred mare who is absoloutly super!

Any can do the fun rides- all sorts seem to have a go, TBs are good but arabs seem to be the specialist ones. But it does depend on conformation etc, a badly put together arab wont be as valuable as a well put together cob!

I think it all comes down to the individual nag...remember Donna Helme's Bobby, they went to WEG in 1994 amongst other achievements
