The other day i decided to try running - yes, i know i am not wise in the head. I had my gutties on so it shouldnt have been too bad. So i cycled down the road a bit and then got off and decided to run for a bit (parking the bike in a gateway).
This was a very useful experiment actually.
Having only run for several hundred metres down the flat road and back with a few rest stops to catch my breath i was pooped. My legs felt like i was dragging them through mud or running on a very squidgy surface. I also got out of breath a lot quicker than if i had cycled up a hill (which i would do).
So anyway, i cycled back home and then shortly after i was getting sharp pains running up my legs, like cramps.
So then i thought - this is why a lot of people dont trot on the roads!
Perhaps a bit slow on the uptake here but it hit home to me what horses go through lol!
Anyway. on another note i also tried running a while back and i walked for a good bit first maybe 5 or 10 mins and it really made a difference to how easy it was for me to run and how much better i coped. because i tried to run with only walking for a few minutes and it was a lot harder.
So these experiments can be taken across to horses too. You hear about what you should do such as walking for 10mins first etc but they seem ok if you just go on ahead and trot or whatever . but it makes you realise it if you try it yourself.
I think though with regards to the trotting on roads if you introduced it gradually it would be ok. and your legs would harden up and get used to it. i never remember my legs getting sore when i was wee, running about - except when i fell over of course lol!
