As my farrier was shoeing JB today, he told me that he had something on his tendon. I felt it and sure enough, there was a squishy lump. Pressing it didn't seem to cause JB pain. He has been lame for the last week but I thought it was because his shoes needed to be done (there is always trouble if he is even a bit over 6/7 weeks) or else his back (as he was slightly tender). The farrier said it was probably a burst blood bubble or vessel and nothing to worry about. I have actually never heard of this before (and I have been fairly well educated in different ailments over the years) - he said to do on riding him. (even if he is lame!) HAve any of you any views/experience on this? Especially as to how soon he will recover, should I get a vet? should I go on riding? (He is lame in trot only but a bit stuffy in walk - which could be arthritis related) I suspect he injured himself either corvorting around or trying to get rid of the flies. Thanks

I might ring your vet for advice. I havent heard of this but i guess its possible if he maybe knocked himself or something. I dont think you should go on riding until you figure out what the craic is, perhaps the rest will sort him out a bit.

Sorry this is a new one for me too, I would ring the vet and see what they have to say. I would be interested to hear their views.

Yep new to me too. I think if it's tendon related I would call the vets to be on the safe side.

Ditto to the above. Can't be too careful with tendons. Hopefully it will be nothing at all but a phone call to the vet should put your mind at rest. Fingers crossed Duckles.

I have seen the effect of a burst blood vessel near a large muscle mass and that was a cxircular pattern under the hair, quite large. Never heard of one near a tendon but I suppose its feasible, however I would never carry on riding a lame horse for anything other than arthritis without getting it thoroughly checked oout and then would probably limit to walking in hand if it was a tendon related injury needing mobility. Hope you can get an answer to what it is as its unusual to say the least!

Ditto all the above. I would be especially cautious with any kind of injury near or on a tendon.

Thanks for asking Scatty and to everyone else for the advice. I have often felt I should donate JB to a vet's hospital as he has so many complaints and gets so many injuries that he would really assist the students! So although I was worried, I am so used to him going lame that I did not immediately phone the vet. Mostly as I was busy and broke and I knew he would say 'bring him in.' The swelling went down fairly quickly so I gave him a few days rest and once he trotted up sound, I rode him again. Brig - I am glad you have heard of the burst blood vessel and it does make more sense on a muscle mass. My farrier may have been wrong (although he is pretty sharp) and like all of you, I tend to worry (a lot) about tendons. I hope it will be the last I will hear of this.
