I was just looking at DB's thread about Murph's hind leg injoury and thought, "What a wealth of knowledge and help there is on here...." I hope Murph is better soon DB, it seems your farrier is on the case and things are looking good, but I am sure the help you got here eased your mind too. Wonderful crowd on here who know so much. So I come here tonight for reassurance too... When I got to the yard today Ben was standing in his box with a poultice on his off fore, looking quite sorry for himself. Turns out he came in this morning with a sort of tack (short and not rusty/jagged) in his foot. He was a bit sore and when the foot was lifted and the tack removed there was a bit of blood. They cleaned and poulticed it to keep it clean and draw any mud/filth out and to keep it dry, and as a precaution. He is in tonight and seemed sound on it when I left, mving around quite happily, (and eating) I didn't take him out of his box so don't know what he is like in trot but there was no throbbing or swelling of the leg or fetlock area. Couldn't really feel his hoof cos it is so well bandaged!! The site of the wound is just to the edge of the foot, near the hoof wall, thus (I am assured) no damage to structures, i.e. frog or pedal bone etc.... He will get a fresh poultice tomorrow. I am so worried, after Ronan's terrible injury....silly superstitition is taking over, I am just so afraid I am a jinx - Ronan's accident happened on 24th of the month and this is 24th......am I being daft?? Have any of you had such a thing??? A puncture wound in the foot?

Hi BB sorry to hear about Ben hope he is feeling better soon. I had a similar experience with a friends horse that i was looking after while she was on holiday. I went to feed them in the morning and she hobbled over on 3 legs, when I looked a screw (no idea where it had come from unless it was out of the field shelter) had gone into her foot like Ben very near the hoof wall. I called the vet who got it out and poulticed it and said there was no point giving anti biotics because they wouldnt have any affect because of where it was situated. We kept her in for 3 days changing the poultice each day after which she was fine. A couple of weeks later she went lame on it again and as the farrier was there he looked at it and thought there was an abcess which he cut out, 2 more days of poulticing and she has been fine since (touches wood). Hope Ben makes a speedy recovery too.

No you are not being silly! Just a concientious horse Mummy. I got all worried about YO's pony yeaterday after Fimaqs problems with Dex. She came in with an eye closed. Thankfully it is fine today.

I am sure he will be fine. But I know how unpleasant and worrying it must be. Hope he is better soon.

BB, put the superstition behind you! (but I do understand it!) Ben has just had a daft accident in the way they all do and will recover - no damage to nasty bits, he'll be fine.
I do understand that you should be anxious, but it will be OK. ;D

Thankyou everyone. :-*Can't relax or think straight, sometimes the net is a bad thing cos I looked it up and one site said it is either trivial or fatal....
But other times the net is a VERY good thing....cos you lot are there and offer positives........... ;D
Thank you, you are great. ;D

I'm sure he will be fine in a day or two...may end up with an abcess if your really unlucky (sp...how do you flippin spell it?) but I totally understand how you feel as after all Ronan's injury was just a freak accident too. X

BB, you are so right about the wealth of knowledge the Paddocks crew offers - I'd be completely lost without it. Even after reading your replies, I've now found out about dealing with another unexpected injury. I hope Ben is on the mend quickly hun

Well when I went up yesterday afetr not a wink of sleep he was standing merrily munching looking very relaxed. Took the poutice off and there was nothing to see, no discharge or anything else and P said she would have been very surprised if there had been. Then we trotted him up, tinsy bit unlevel but not bad at all, so then I took him for a wee walk but all he wanted to do was drag me to the field ...so back to the box we went and S applied another poultice (dry and just a tiny bit of animlaintex to cover the tiny little prick in his sole). Farriers are up today and they will examine it before shoeing him, they are greta guys and will keep me right. As you say an abscess (think that is the right spelling Haffy ;D ;D) is the hopefully worst possible outcome which isn't life threatening after all.... I am sorry I made such a fuss guys... but thank you all for being so reassuring and understanding and helpful... Off now to see how Sol got on!!! Hope she has posted!!

BB, a horse at the stable I use managed to stand on a nail in his stable (no one knows how as it is a big american barn style with stables buil of breeze block). I don't know all the details but he was back in work within a month.
I hope Ben is fine, I don't blame you for worrying as I would be just the same.

He was sound today so I took him out for a hack ;D ;Dand he was super. No naughtiness or napping or fizz. He was just so happy to be ridden, grabbed the bridle when I put it on, he is such a darling... Then I put him out having cleaned his foot with iodine - the YO will puy a poultice on tomorrow when he comes in at 8.30 - hopefully just a precaution... Phew - thank you so much for your good vibes and support everyone..

Missed this whilst I was on holiday- glad he is sorted and he was lucky the nail was at the side. If there is blood then its usually a good- ish sign (said with caution) as it means it can be located and cleaned and a poultice should do the trick, sounds as though your care was spot on. If its the frog its a different story and unfortunately it can be fatal. Fortunately this is really rare.
