I have had my friend very kindly video me again today, will put it on here when it has loaded. The thing is all the way through it Pete is resiting the bit. He has his mouth open, he moves his head, he gnashes his teeth. Help! He has always done this to an extent but today it seems particularly bad. I don' t find a drop noseband stops him it just seems to frustrate him more. Teeth and back are fine.

What bit is he in? Maybe it just doesn't suit his mouth? Is it a new thing or has he always done it? How is he out hacking/when not working forward into a contact/outline?
sorry lots of questions and I ahve no idea how to answer but they may help someone else?

When was the last time he had his teeth looked at? It could be that he has a bit of pain in his mouth.

They were done in March, he had quite a lot done in October last year and had a bit of work done on them in March. He will have the dentist again in September.

I don't know Sol - I am sure people hear will come up with good ideas. It does sound like discomfort. I had a friend whose mare gnashed her teeth and resisted the bit - she rode her bitless for about 6 months and then got her a one of those kk ultra comfort bits (sorry I just can't think of the name - begins with s - they are very nice bits). Her thinking was that it was a schooling problem rather than a bit problem per se. She had got into a habit of resistance (possibly originally caused by pain) and riding bitless broke the habit and then she accepted the bit ever afterwards.

i think you mean a sprenger? duckles. i use one on Frank, hes never been on the bit but that comes from his past use for point to point and his pelvic injury, hes slowley starting to try now hes recovering and i found the sprenger helps loads to help him accept more. he use to evade and through his head around until i tried the RS (i think) ultra french link. annax

Was just thinking it could be the joint sol. He might be happier in a link or a roller or even a straight bar?

Sounds like unhappiness/stress, could be his mouth/teeth or could be something in his back/neck or hocks. Is he tail swishing? It also could indicate he is frustrated by something. Horses will sometimes do this when asked to work after lots of play- say doing lots of fun gallopey type things, then being asked to outline and work. So it could be a bit of temper also!!!! You will need to rule out things gradually, I would start by having his teeth done again, then if that doesnt work ask a physio to watch him work as youve only recently worked an outline consistently??? I had a sprenger kk for Basil which was great but for schooling it was a touch sharp for him, Ive put him in a fixed cheek now so the sprenger is for sale as it belongs to a friend who wants rid.

Think you could be right about the temper. He was much better today, he even kicked out onFriday! Much more relaxed and into it today. Think I may be being a bit too soft.
