I always used a ready tied one. Haven't needed one for a long time now. Useless even with a tie!

Fi's link explains it well. Once you do it a few times, its second nature and as I not a co-ordinated person, that means most people catch on even quicker. I know the fake ones look as well but they wouldn't give the support to the neck that a proper stock does - which is why we are told we have to wear them x country.

I have a stock at home and when I was getting ready to go down to the show, neither rainbow or I could figure out how to do it. In the end I tied it like a tie We now know how to tie a stock!!
