While out on a hack on Saturday (before disastous solo hack) with my friend Debs we were "attacked" by a very protective and territorial curlew! Well I've seen curlews many times before but never this close and personal and it was making an awful din! Hadn't realised how big they were and how long and sharp their beak looks! Well AJ wasn't too chuffed to say the least! I went down later on foot and he was still there and it appears that there at least 2 pairs with chicks, got very lose and managed to get a pic which i'll add later Zx

That is fascinating! I know curlews are big but I never imagined them as hacking hazards. Please print the picture. I'm dying to see it.

Saw a bird attack myself today - it was quite amazing. I was schooling in the arena in the hot sun and I heard a commotion in the trees in the field behind the arena. I looked and saw a buzzard flying up and a merlin (I think) dive bombing him,. I suppose he was protecting the eggs or the chicks but he was such a brave bird. Tiny compared to the buzzard, he flew up and dived, beak first, down on the buzzard, who would move of course and then the merlin repeated it and repeated it until he got the buzzard totally out of the range of the chicks/eggs whatever.

Seems to be a lot of aggressive birds about. Maybe Hitchthingy was on to something? (Actually I never saw the film)
