Well, it's hot but I go out early in the morning or in the evening and stick to shady paths at a sedate pace. Poor old P, he hates his daily shower but when we come back he needs a hose off. He looks lovely and white and shiny afterwards .... until he rolls and then he's just brown

I don't know what you call them down south and in France (horseflies maybe?) but we are plaqued by clegs!! They are vile useless creatures in the same category as wasps and jelly fish. Have no worthy use in this world and have no business being here (You can tell I am very relaxed about them can't you??) Ben is out overnight in a fly rug, I got a cattle thing before I left G'side, it is desgned to keep flies off for 3 months. It's a sort of plastic token presumably impregnated with fly repellent. It goes through the cow's ear but nedless to say it's attached to his rug although some people plait them into the horse's mane. No idea if it works or not really because when he goes out he just ambles off with his pals and his head goes down...we tend not to put them out til it's cooler, about 8pm. Riding wise I am just coating him with deet and putting his fly mask on, it helps but is by no means perfick... Anyway' it's gonna start raining up here tomorrow guys, I am on holiday this week - having a pone week....

bonnyben I have been thinking about plaiting the cattle tags in...do they actually work at all?
Not had much time for riding again lately but had a very hot ride this morning...the only good thing was it was too hot for Murph to be silly as I very very nearly ate dirt on Thursday night during one of his 'silly five minutes'. I only didn't because he stopped bucking just as I apparantly announced 'okay I'm gone!' and lifted his head up and threw me back which allowed me to slither off his ears into the saddle again.

I'm out at 6.30 in the morning. Beats the heat and flies and is lovely to watch bunnies and squiggles scurrying around everywhere before the world wakes up.

Well done you!!! Monkey!! I think they do work haffy, to some degree anyway. The guys at the last yard did plait them into manes and thought they made a difference. Ben's is attched to the neck of his fly rug and he certainly seems comfortable enough when I put him out. It's hard to say just how good they are, but it isn't doing any harm. They come in packs of 10 I think and I paid £4 for the tag, very cheap if indeed it does help for 3 months!!!

P is plagued by taons (I think they are your clegs - horseflies about an inch long). I spray with my salad dressing and he's in a mask but by god they are vile things.

...and it is too hot to ride at the moment. We're up towards 35C and it's sticky (unusually). It's nice in the morning at about 5.30am .....

Those Cleggs are nasty, saw them in the lake district but we don't get them here thankfully. I always ride early or late or sometimes both! Fire hates going out in the heat, he'd rather go out in the snow! Have given up schoolin Trav and am just hacking him in walk, he sweats up too quickly in this weather for schoolin. Followed by a lovely cold wash down.
