I'm not fond of pulling manes. R's mane was a straggly two-tone mess so I hogged it - it looked great and then has grown out very nicely. Is this an option?

But of course, manes are a good fly swat this time of year.....

Now, will probs get shot for this although i have always thought cutting manes was a no-no - BUT have seen 2 horses with cut manes (one hates pulling, too) and it actually doesnt look too bad to me. You could just give it a wee trim sol with the scissors - sure you wouldnt notice when it is plaited and it would maybe tidy it up a bit. Obv you would notice it when its down but it doesnt look too bad.
Im afraid cutting is the only other option - you can get cutting combs but basically its the same thing! You might just have to ignore him and just go for it, teeny weeny sections at a time each day.

I always cut my two's with scissors, I think pulling is rather nasty personally. I just feather the ends a bit...looks okay after a week or so lol anyhows Murph hardly has any it's really thin and scraggly and he rubs it too. Harry has so much it's untrue so its scissors or nothing which would be down to his knees.

When I did P's long mop I cut it to about 2 inches longer than I wanted it and pulled it from there. His mane was quite thin though so didn't need thinning as well as pulling. But this way I just did small bits at a time, gradually getting shorter. Do it after exercise when he's warm and just do small amounts at a time. I must say I was really unsure of pulling to start with (think I did a post on here) - I did Sancys once and she hated it and has been fussy about me even combing her mane since. P didn't care though and just stood falling asleep. So I guess it depends how sensitive they are as to how they take to it.

rosie could do with that her mane is so thick in the middle its looks funny when plaited.

Thanks brig. One of the liveries has one - he calls it a rake!!! He offered to let me borrow it me cos I was saying i use a solo comb on Ben's mane but it doesn't thin it out, just shortens it. That is the very same thing!! I think I shall buy one, they are ideal. Shame you can't buy a little mane fairy or something to plait the mane though!!! I am hopeless!!
