I am thinking about joining, what experiences do you all have of riding clubs? I though 'cos i have no transport it was pointless but it seems they can often help with that so could be a really good thing. It would get me and Pete out and about, the next stage before a show. Thoughts???

I love clubs! They organise lots of activities, will transport the neddies to events and, if you choose wisely, you can make lots of new horsey friends.

It can be difficult finding a good one. Ive really struggled, joined two last year, one didnt keep me informed about what was coming up and was limited in its choice of activities. The other started well but it quickly became clear it was very cliquey and more geared towards certain members. That one folded and Im not sure about the other as they never kept in touch!!! Years ago I was a member of a fairly good one which had some good stuff arranged but again it could be cliquey. I think they can be beneficial but get recommendations before parting with cash!

Yeah, i think clubs are great! I would choose pony club over riding club though because i think it offers more and it really seems to bring everybody on that goes to it that I know.
Anyway, if you take a look at local horsey mags, newsheets, bulletin boards, notice boards etc, you will be able to figure out which club seems to be the most active. Some clubs do seem to be more geared to particular people than others. In your case I would look for a club that does plenty of training and clinics and fun competitions with small heights/levels to cater for all. There is no point in paying the fees if you arent going to attend regularly.
You could find names of all the clubs in your area and go along to spectate at some of their events and see what they are like.
Word of mouth recommendations are by far the best way to go.
Hope you get sorted.
As for transport you could put up a note saying if anyone goes to such and such riding club if they would be willing to give you a lift? Or perhaps the club would be able to help without having to put up a note.

Ive been in two. THe first one was centered around a school so there was always loads on- lessons, competitions, outings etc. The second (my present one) is very small and its really just a device to allow people to get the card so that they can compete. So I suppose I would say find out what your club does or organises etc and whether it would suit you.
