One of our Saturday hacking crowd had an accident yesterday. We were cantering through the wood as usual, it is a lovely long canter which we do fairly sedately until the last little bit where you can open them up for a faster canter. I was leading and had just pushed when there was a shout from behind so I pulled up & spun round to find that P had come off. Luckily she was last so there was no horse behind to potentially stand on her. There had been a small branch on the ground going about a foot into the track which she had tried to avoid but H had tripped over it and fallen. P told us that her back was fine but her arm really hurt. S rang the YO to tell her what had happened and she said she would come and meet us and take P to hospital. We had to walk to the end of the track where it joins the road and poor P kept going white but we couldn't carry her or get her back on and lead her. S (ride leader) went ahead to make sure she met the YO first and could give her an accurate account of what happened and I walked with P.
The YO stayed with her at the hospital to make sure she was ok. My sister rang this morning for an update and poor P has broken her wrist, the bone was well out of line, and had to stay in last night so they could x ray again this morning to see if she needed an operation to pin the bone. What makesit even worse for her is that she is just starting 2 weeks holiday.
We had checked H over and he seemed fine, not lame or anything just very muddy. He managed the hack ok (the YO brought one of the kids to ride him) but was a little stiff. However, when we got back we found out that he had knocked one of his front top teeth right back. Judging by that and the mud all down his front and on his chest the poor boy must have done a nose dive. He is having the day off today with the vet coming to check him over tomorrow.
All we could say was there but for the grace of god go any of us. It also made me think that I always expect the ride leader to take a mobile and never do myself, and as it turns out none of the others did either. What if it had been S and her mobile had been smashed? I think I will be taking mine from now on just in case.
