I just wondered if anyone can tell me if I should worry that Pete coughs, occasionally. It isn't all the time, never in his stable but once or twice when ridden is getting to be normal for him. I just put it down to having a hay diet, but should I worry?

a quick call to your vets to ask advice would be the best thing. kieran used to cough and we were gonna get him scoped until he got colic the day he was due to be scoped (why is it that we never knew the reason to ANY of his problems so frustrating!!) remembering these things is what puts me right off the thought of ownership again.

Worms can cause coughing but I take it he's up to date? A hay diet should not on its own cause coughing. Is there any nasal discharge?
I'd ring my vet for advice.

Always best to takes vets advice but is this just in winter/when he's stabled/on hay? If so could be a mild allergy/respiration based thing due to the spores in hay/bedding/his 'stable' enviroment?
Is it randomly during exercise or early on?
I ask because Murph had a nasty virus of his upper respiratry tract as a youngster (Flu in reality but vet would not say so!) which has left him with a slight weakness and despite being out he can occasionally cough. This is mainly if he is on hay and usually the odd cough early on in exercise (almost as if he is clearing his airways) followed by a sneeze (well you know that snotty snort they do all over you usually) and after that he is generally fine for the rest of the exercise period.

I would check with vet to make sure he hasnt got anything that should be sorted but I also wouldnt worry too much, it only takes a dusty batch of hay to start them off with the occasional cough and as long as it isnt prolonged or deep it means he is just clearing his pipes, but you should damp or steam his hay so it doesnt continue to irritate, or exacerbate it. If it continues once you do this then he may need scoping to check waht is going on.

YaY he didn't cough today! Yes it is only at his first trot of the day. Never prolonged or chesty. But I was seriously considering a vet visit. Hope he can just behave!
