I have come to the conclusion that you can in some cases. Ad lib is all well and good if the horse is a poor doer but it really does fatten the fat ones! Perhaps being very slow here as yous probly already know this lol! I dont think people actually think too much about how much forage they are feeding and put most of the blame on cereals.

I think a lot also depends on the type of forage. As you know I'm fighting this battle with Eddie, whilst trying to ensure she has enough forage she also has to lose some waistline. If I gave her ad-lib hay she would be at bursting point. I have now swapped about 70% of her hay for barley straw instead (and it's still not ad lib, she is trickle fed throughout the day) so she is still getting forage going through her gut but without as much sugar. This combined with regular exercise seems to be working slowly - for the first time today I looked and thought 'yes she's definately better than when she arrived'. Still wiating for a bloomin weigh tape I ordered to arrive. It is very hard though getting the right balance.

Still wiating for a bloomin weigh tape I ordered to arrive. Just use a bit of bailer string. You don't really need to know how much she weighs, just whether she's losing it or putting it on. String is the perfect - economincally and environmentally friendly.

If you soak the hay it loses some of the sugar so you can feed more - or mix with straw (although i forget which sort now)
I dont find the weight tape particularly helpful for Harry it doesnt seem to change much even though i can see if he has lost or gained weight.

joandlad I started doing that but kept losing the bit of twine I'd tied the knot in
