Just had my first lesson since 22nd December. Pete was absolutely brilliant. Transitions better, not too much bit gnashing some correct bend a forward walk. A really nice canter circle. I really love that horse. Only one thing, I asked my RI if she thought we could do a little dressage test and she was very negative. Said we could but would'nt get good marks 'cos he is not a dressage horse. I mainly asked 'cos I don't think she has any hope for us and she kind of confirmed it, shame there are times when I think we could do it. I need her to believe in us more for a future I think. What do you think?

What an awful thing to say! Of course you could do a dressage test! Anyone can do a dressage test. I firmly believe any horse can be trained to do a good Preliminary test. If she helped you you could improve your marks. Its a bit like saying you arent going to get placed in a jumping competition because your horse isnt a showjumper. Again, you can have lessons to improve and get better at jumping.
You dont necessarily need to get a different instructor but theres nothing stopping you taking Pete to a competition and then getting the comments back and asking your instructor to help you on the things that you didnt get so good in.

Is this your new instructor Sol? Very disappointed in her reaction to your question. Is this due to conformation or injury? Or is this due to her biased opinion as he is not 'warmblood' or some other floaty paced type? Ok so he may not go above elementary as he is 'not a dressage horse' (and this IMHO is due to snobbery in the dressage world) but you will have a lot of fun getting there and if he can hold his paces and carry you accurately through a test he will be doing a lot more than some 'dressage horses!' Tell her you are suprised at her negativity and dont listen to such tripe!

I think i would be changing instructor after that. Any horse or pony can do dressage. She seems very negative. I bet Pete is better than she thinks he is as are you .

I was going to say the same thing as Brigadier but she said it so much better. Its a bit like saying don't go show jumping as your horse won't be able to do 1.30m

It isn't the new one, it's the one one I have had for over a year. Knocked my feeble confidence tho'. He is a warmblood bless 'im, and he floats round the field with no one on his back. You have all helped me to go ahead and try the new instructor who got a welsh sectio c to medium level! She sounds like my kind of person. Things can only get better! He is conformationally challenged, with stiff hocks and right stifle. Will post some pics.

This is so wrong!!!! Why shouldn't you have a go???!!! Silly moo, that instructor. I think it would be a nice thing to aim for and so what if you don't win??
I know what you mean about knocking your confidence Sol. My old RI did that to me all the time - actually she just ignored me really. Funny how my confidence ebbed away - I went from someone who was up for anything to a timid old bag. My new RI is great for me - she really seems to believe in me and P, even though, heaven knows, we're not up to much. But when I come away from one of her lessons I feel that anything might be possible ....
Change your RI pronto! You deserve better than this.

Sol ignore her. What a thing to say. Where have the days gone of competing for fun?? And once you've done your first test, surely that then gives you some positive aims for the future? You just do it girl!
