Because last summer was so wet and cool, and because straw is both rare (and therefore expensive) and very poor quality, the yard where I keep Dems has changed and only uses shavings now. Pros: she has lovely dry feet, I have always known her to have poor, wet, soft feet, but it seems it was because of the straw! Cons: all the poor horses get bored, they can't enjoy a good munch, and when I take her out she is totally obsessed with FOOD. Whatever looks remotely edible works as a magnet!
Do you have the same problems in Britain, getting reasonably priced good quality straw?

i think straw in our area is quite well priced but savvy can't have it because it irritates her throat and she eats half of it before morning. shavings are great keep the muck heap down cost less and the daft animals don't eat them!

Up here in Yorkshire, straw is cheap £1.80 per bale or £23 for a large bale. As i now only have one plus a dot, I use aubiose... which is better than shaving as it is + 6 times more absobent than shavings and the gardeners love it! :)my muck heap has never been so small ;D as it rots down very quickly (3 months) It costs £7 per bale... (size of a shavings bag) and I use one per week. on the plus side, it doesn't smell! which is good as OH doesn't do horses

We haven't used straw for ages - when you've got eight boxes to do it is such hard work and so stinky. We loved Aubiose, but it is now too expensive, so we are using chopped linen, which is great. Four bales per box lasts two weeks in winter, when the nags are in from 5pm to 8am. No smell, easy to poo pick and we SELL the dung. Bliss. But talking of the price of cereals: caramba, it's gone mad. The hard feed and hay are so expensive now that the livery price has just gone up and it's hurting!

£6.50 for a bale of hay? How big is the bale? Ours was £2.00 a bale (small) but is now £2.40 'cos we get it from the guy that delivers it to everyone else on the yard (easier to get hay when everyone else does because we can all sweep up together!) As for bedding, we're on shavings at the moment, but will be on straw at uni (included in price for livery) and we'll be using a lot of it as we won't have rubber mats (will miss those , but they're staying here for when we come back)

we pay 20 euros for a big round hay and 10 euros for big straw normally get through 2 of each a week
the shavings are 8 euros a bale here unless we get some from our nieghbour for free but it only comes about every 4 months

Whats Aubiose I used bedmax this year and last. was really good and found it lightre than shavings but the price has just gone up to £7.55 a bale so I think I will be back on straw next winter - £2 a bale for fairly large one. Hay costs me £3.50 a bale.
