Can anyone suggest any basic schooling exercises and how to ride them?? We are going really well in walk and trot (not even thinking about canter yet as I want to get these two paces mastered properly and get her nicely balanced first). It takes about 20 mins for her to settle nicely and work properly (which I know is about right for any horse so no problem there), but after another ten minutes i run out of ideas. We do the normal things like changing the rein, transitions from walk, trot and halt etc. I do circles the best I can (but I can't seem to get her to bend correctly - we end up doing sort of square type thing), hourglasses and the odd trotting pole all with no problem - I just need a little help progressing that little bit more.

I found this on the internet a long time ago as i had the same problem. Thought it was quite good. thepaddocks.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=schooling&action=display&thread=5039I would recommend having a lesson at least every other week - private or group although private would be better for both of you. Make sure you are riding her forwards all the time and having the same contact on each rein. Every time you slow down a pace think about pushing her forward and dont let her dawdle into walk or halt. Another thing that would be worth practicing would be your halt to walk transition as it can be really sloppy, so you can practice getting it sharp! Something else that might be worth starting to think about is beginning to teach her more complicated things like rein back and leg yeilding which will help with her balance when you start cantering. You could start teaching this from the ground. In those lessons i recommended you could get your instructor to help you start her off.

You'll find lots of helpful stuff in Brig and Maxi's workouts.

Depending on how she is doing I think I would be inclined to introduce some simple canter transitions even just asking her to canter down the long side.
The other exercise I find really useful for any age horse is to put out 4 poles in a clock face which can be ridden over or around.
