R often needs things to think about when he's wound up, stuff like lateral movements etc usually take the fizz out of the situation because they get him concentrating.
I've noticed that he has started to do a baby version of Spanish walk from time to time and wonder if that is something that I could/should encourage (his mum was Spanish so it might just be genes)
But I'm not sure I know the aids other than very roughly. Anyone an expert?

You teach it from the ground Rac, you need to walk alongside then halt at a wall or side of the school and smartly tap the horses leg with the whip until he reacts then praise lots and leave it there. Next session do the same again and keep repeating until one tap gets him lifting his leg, build up from there finding the best place to tap to get a reaction and concentrate on one leg only until he gets it in his brain what you want, then work onthe other leg until he lifts it willingley to a light tap. Then try for one leg then the other. Once he starts understanding what you want you need a rider to give a signal with a whip whilst a person on the ground reinforces. Be careful if your horse is a bit clever with his legs, I started to work with Basil with it- but when he is grumpy he makes me think he would use his legs to strike out so Ive left off it for a bit. It takes a bit of time to teach but well worth it- A New Years Resolution perhaps?
