After yesterday's horrendous downpour I have had to accept that winter's coming .....
The boys were OK in their WB Landa original standard necks (and boy did it rain last night). Their shoulders were a tad damp, but not too bad considering, but I'm thinking ahead and it's not very cold yet ..... cash is tight and there are some lovely looking Rhinegold Aspen heavyweight combos on eBay for less than 40 quid which seems a real bargain.
Anyone tried one? Are they as nice as they look?

Chompy came with a Rhinegold HW rug (don't know if its an Aspen) his has a detachable neck and is probably about 4-5 years old.
Would I buy another... NO!
what I have found with them is that the lining frays along stitching and then comes away, he even managed to take the whole thing after 1 strap came undone (how is still a mystery).
The stitching on one surcingle came off and I have had to get that repaired and the lining around one of the leg straps frayed away so that broke. he now has a fillet string running under his tail.
The outer material is stronger but now has a couple of rips which started as a little snag that could have been caught on branch.
I think it may just last this winter as a 2nd HW rug, but I wouldn't risk it for day in day out use.
Modified to add that for the last 2 years it has been is 2nd HW rug, for use when his other one is soaked, or if it too warm for him as the other one he has, has a full neck and is very very very warm!

Ive had a few rhinegold rugs and they arent great (stable rug and a sweat rug) but then again connie wasnt a wrecker in the stable (lol!) and none of the others wore it and the sweat rug was just it on them standing about.
Ive had to do several repairs to both of them. Not sure what to do about the stable rug - i think its a charity case!

Darn! Anyone else got anything to say, or a recommendation for a budget rug? I was thinking of HW combo but open to suggestions. Can't be pricey as I have to buy two ....

Yes that would have been intelligent but as you know I am a rug virgin and it never occurred to me that I might need more than one each or that they would get damp through if it rained hard thanks for the links I'll see what their postage to frog is ........

Requisite rugs are actually quite good! They seem to be the only decent rugs that fit Faith's big shouders and huge bottom and if I'm honest, my Requisite's are probably the best rugs I own! (and we have a few Mastas, the odd Weatherbeeta and some other random brands). The first one I bought was over 2 years ago, a LW turnout with a fleecy lining and that is still going strong to this day, despite pretty mcuh everyday usage from about sept-april 2008 and then oct-april 2009, and now again from about october onwards...it is brilliant! And I don't think itwas that expnsive either...maybe about £30 I think

Rhinegolds are cheap nasty and made for giraffes or camels or anything but a horse...the fit is shocking. never had one myself but know loads of people who have bought them as they are cheap...well it's for a bloody good reason!
To be perfectly honest you get what you pay for Rac, most of the cheap brands are nasty...and use cheap materials etc.
Personally i wasn't impressed with robinsons rugs either but each to their own i guess. I bought one several years ago now and promptly sold it unused.
I have also only ever had bad experiences with masta Rugs (they leak like sieves amongst other things) and don't like horseware as the necks are too tight and unadjustable (why?) (Mum bought murph one this year and it's not bad on him to be honest but then he's a tb weed) I wouldn't have chose it myself and wouldn't again.
IMO stick to the weatherbeetas if you can

yeah rosie has a masta zing( i think) and the rug it self fits lovely part from her some how breaking the clip on one of her leg straps within in the first few days of having it! but to get a neck cover has been a nightmare i hate them! they are not adjustible like matties lovely tescos rug! so the medium fit lovely in length around her neck and bottom bit but buckles are quite low down and cause it was unadustible when she put her head down it only come half way up her neck! the large is very big in the length around her neck and bottom bit but does go up more than half her neck at least! So i find the rugs are good but neck covers arent! Cant really comment on any other rug.

Weatherbeta, Fal, Tesco (!) and Amigo rugs are the only rugs that have ever fitted Mattie well.
He has a lightweigh Fal rug that is 20 years old and Mattie has managed to take one strap off. Its not ripped or anything. Amigo stable rugs are lovely and warm, fitted him well. Tesco rug is awesome! must get a new one! And WB (older ones mind) I've found are great for awkward big shouldered, high withered, short bodied TB's!
I have a new Gallop rug which wasn't cheap so I shall how that one goes

I feel like I alsways say this, but yet again I agree with Haffy, I really believe you get what you pay for. I too have used requisite rugs and found them to be not very good at all.
Someone did recommend the Amigo rugs (budget version by those that make Rambo rugs) but haven't tried them, tend to stick with WB now.

Jack - it really does seem to depend on the horse! It's all alright us having a personal favourite as a human, but it's more down to whatever fits your horse!!! Personally I dislike WBs as they're too narrow and rub Faith's shoulders bald if left on for more than a day, yet cheapo rugs seem to fit her much better...just goes to show really doesn't it?!?!

*** I LOVED the Premier Equine rug we had for a grand total of about 6 hours, but it had to go back as it was huuuuuuuuuuuge (at 6'3 when she's normally 6'0 - their mistake) and drowned her, but when I enquired, they had run out of 6'0s so we had to just get a refund Will deffo be investing in one again next time we're in need of a new rug though!

Why would we shoot you Jack. Savvy has quite a few rugs mainly Masta and Weatherbeeta and dependant on the make some fit better than others. Dainty has stolen one of her WB's because it fitted her better because she has narrower shoulders rather that Mrs Tank lol. We are quite lucky that the two boys don't need rugs because Pest is an odd shape (short coupled but built like a brick s**t house and Chip is tiny) I do prefer weatherbeeta's over the rest of savvy's rug but it's what fits the horsey best tbh

I like my rugs on the big side spotti. Harry has a 6 3 prem equine as it was in sale and no 6fts left..he looks lovely and snug and I hate to see bottoms sticking out personally although it seems the correct fit actually should see this happening if the diagrams are anything to go by!

Well it just swamped her! It was down over her knees and the neck line sat waaaaaaaay too low and slipped back with the slightest of movements, and so it had to go...I was very sad to pack it away and post it back though... ACTUALLY...Faith is in need of a new LW turnout...hmm...I wonder if Premier Equine have any good 'uns...

Ladys Spare rug is a rhinegold and what I notice is how much heavier it is then hers shires one. Not as in padding but it weighs aton, I think she knows when shes wearing it! Fire n Lady now both have shires and i love them, they are brill. It's been peeing it down for over a week and not even a leek on either of them. But I don't think they would be a good fit on a more cobby horse. Tiggy had a mastas which was great for Tiggy, I find them a terrible fit on fire, necks are huge. I have been buying bargains on ebay too ;D Have you managed to find any?
