I'm on the lookout for a heavier rug for Murphy but I'm not sure which of these are the best. The detachable neck rugs are quite a bit more expensive but is it worth it?

I have a detachable because I like to feeling that I can take it off if I need to. Mind you, I never take it off unless I have to have him on stable rest. So I don't know if its that much of an advantage over an attached neck. My YO and her friend always take the hoods off as they think the hoods cause the rug to rub (I don't think this is really true, it might be that the rug is the wrong fit). I have to admit that I love the neck being covered - keeps the neck and mane lovely and clean!!! (and of course really snug looking too)

Brave has a full neck and a half neck rug, Chompy has a full neck and one with a detachable neck. He does get too hot sometimes in his HW if he has the neck on so I find it useful to be able to take it off.
However some detachable neck rugs are a bit pants and when they have thier heads down to graze leave a gap where rain and cold get in.

P has a full neck and LFM has a half neck - won't go for a detachable one as I feel there is more of a chance for it to rub the neck. Just my opinion. Modified to say - never heard of Premier Equine - are they good?? What sort of fit are they? and what price are they? thanks x

Prem equines are fantastic and bought diresct from manufacturer so cheaper than others in same range.
The winterbuster is on par with rambo supremes/wbeata taka's in spec apart from it's 450g filling rather than their 400g. Mine live out and never need an underug under theirs.
Fit wise they are excellent...like weatherbeetas...they fit anything and were designed by a horse lover...lots of nice touches like elastic at top of neck to keep out draughts and stop if scrunching down and elasticated leg gussets etc They do versions with detachable or full necks and the detachable necks velcro down so they don't have the peathingy effect Fi speaks of. My blue writing will link you to their website. I paid 100 for Murphys about 5 yrs ago and then 60 for Harry's in the sale last year!

I have a HW for Mattie which has a detachable neck. Sometimes in the day its cold enough to warrant a HW but he would get too warm with his neck on so at the minute its off. It fits him amazingly, has never rubbed and he hasn't managed to trash it yet and its now 3 years old! I got it from......Tesco

I find the attached necks are really cosy as they sit just that bit higher up the neck (with the neck folded back) and Faith is always so cosy in hers...you can see it in her eyes that she loves it when it comes to winter time because she gets to snuggle up in her cosy duvet (a.k.a. rug) and sip hot chocolate Granted, Faith has never yet needed her neck fastened up (because of her thick mane) and I think she would get too hot if it was, but on the plus side of having the neck bit attached is that when it comes to needing the neck, you don't have to rummage about for it because it got buried under a load of other junk! I think the only time I'd bother with a detachable neck would be if you had to buy it separately and my horse's neck required a different size neck bit than the one that would normally come with the rug...which is actually what Faith would need come to think of it...that would be if we ever used the neck piece anyway! Sorry, I'm rambling. I'll go stand in the corner now and be quiet

I might make a tesco label and stick it on...
Mattie does have difference sized body and neck. His actual rug is a big 6 foot 3 (nearly a 6foot6) and his neck cover is a 6 foot but nearing a 6 foot 3. Good job tesco can't send a correct delivery and all their sizing is a bit odd but I think thats why it fits!

I always go for detachable, I don't have many rugs and having a neck for Lady is like having 2 rugs in 1! I had a built it neck rug for Fire when I first had him, I dunno if it was his head carridge or what but it rubbed a good chunck of his mane off, I have never forgiven them

All AJ's TO rugs are Horseware and they all have detachable neck covers (apart from his Wug which has a 1/2 neck). Personally I prefer the detachable neck cover. His main rug is the Rambo Duo and I cannot praise this rug enough. They are pricey and don't suit all shapes but if they do then I don't think you can buy better! Mine is currently going through it's 7th winter and is still totally waterproof and in excellent condition. The neck attaches with 2 long velcro pieces and doesn't leak or lift up. I have the 100, 200 and 300g under rugs and the outer is 100g. AJ wears this rug all year when necessary but he also has the Amigo 200g and rain sheet.
Happy shopping! Zxx

I've just ordered two WB Orican combos for the boys as they were so miserable with rain pouring down their necks. Mind you, it's turned really mild again .... Oh well, if buying these rugs (and another fleece) guarantees mild weather I'll be happy (unless it's warm and wet)! ;D I'll let you know how we get on. I shall be furious if there is any rubbing of P's lovely long mane
