My lovely OH has promised to buy me a pair of riding boots for christmas ;D I really fancy a pair of long boots having only ridden in jodhpur boots and half chaps. My only problem is that I have short, fat legs and from what people have said, boots seem to be made for the slim and tall. I like chunky soled boots and as I don't compete I don't need really posh ones So, have you any ideas for me please? I quite like the look of the Mark Todd Cook winter boots but don't know how the fittings come up. Thanks for your help, I know how much you all love shopping for someone else ;D

Well, I really loved the Dublin Valley long boots but I got the sizing wrong for my cob legs The foot part was very comfy though - to the extent that I then bought some short Dublin boots, which have been like slippers from the word go. I really like Spanish boots, but they might be a bit too 'unusual' for the UK???

I have Harry Hall boots and they come in different lengths and sizes so I just chose what fitted me best. I love them, they are so comfy, very supportive of my ankle and my leg and scrub up well for shows and things. They have a lining which means my feet keep toastie in winter and cool in the summer. Very reasonablly priced as well

I have cob legs too, but slightly longer than Racs as her Dublin Valley long boots fit perfectly, also I find Mountain Horse boots really comfy and their Ice Rider is really warm, but for an all round worker boot you cant beat muck boots (but make sure you get the one designed for riding) you can wade through mud, walk through a stream, as you would with a wellie but then jump on and ride.

But beware MH boots come up very large. And FGS get muck boots with Velcro fastening, not laces. My MH boots have laces and they are hell (and still too big even the size down, and pretty wide too, only just fit in stirrups even tho they are designed for riding)

Ariat are GORGEOUS. But (cries) i have the same prob as you and im too chunky for them. I tried on zippy joddy boots and they wouldnt zip as my ankles are too thick Id love a pair of long boots too but the only ones that have fitted me are Aigle rubbery ones. But cant even wear them because my stupid lump IS STILL THERE!! Thats a flippin year and a half now.

I do love Aigle boots. My old joddie boots lasted five years of hard, hard work (lots of walking over mountains LOL) before they finally collapsed. But they would have cost 135€ to replace and life just ain't like that for me at the moment (that's the cost of four round bales of hay). The Dublin boots are nice and only cost me one round bale!

I love my Mountain Horse Boots, I think you can get them in regular or wide fitting. They are lovely and chuncky and really snug (fur feet). I like the sound of Fi's suggestion - muck boots, I think I might be looking out a pair of those for myself.

Oh these look good - are they small or large fitting Fi? I think I could be adding these to my Christmas list ;D

they are a bit of a one size fits all, they fit me with my cob legs but H also has a pair and they also fit her long skinny legs (I'm not jealous - honest!) too.

Thanks for all the ideas. Racaille - I like the look of the Dublin ones but can't find them anywhere around here to try on. Fi - I don't do enough mucky stuff to make the muck boots worthwhile even though they do look good. I have gone for the Mountain Horse Rimfrost ones - I went to my local shop and they were really cheap - and the normal ones fitted my cob legs! It was obviously an omen My OH gave in and let me have them early so I wore them yesterday and was really pleased with the fit. (Modified for yet more bad spelling)

I have had a pair of Toggi Calgarry boots for the last year and they have been great although the zip has now broken so I have recently replaced them with Mountain Horse High Rider boots and they are fab! I too have short, wide calves! £132 from Throstle Nest Saddlery. I also hace a pair of Muck Boots "Tyne" and they lovely and warm and you can ride in them Zx
