well i rode rosie last night and she was in a dutch gag when i brought her, i put her in it last night and had no brakes!(fair enough new yard and hadden been ridden in a week since i got her so will try again tonight) it was on the second ring had tiniest of brakes but that was with some effort. SHe just puts her head so far up to the sky! So to see if i had more brakes or not we put it down to the last hole she really protested so moved it to the snaffle and she chilled out a bit once i had chilled aswell. But i would like a bit more brakes so what would u sugest? Goin to Try again tonight and put a running martingale on she how that helps.

Personally I think less is more...if you said she chilled with the snaffle then work with the snaffle and just play about with things she likes for a while - let her know that with you is a nice place to be and she will soon come round and chill out a bit

throwing her head up is usually a sign of discomfort, so it sounds like you need to soften your hands a bit more, try lunging her before you get on to take the tickle out of her toes and then play around in walk and trot for week and just take it easy.

I would suggest maybe getting her teeth looked at before you start playing around with bits for brakes as she may be simply uncomfortable in her mouth.
I would then say take it easy with her (and probably stick to enclosed areas to ride), as from what you said about her when trying her, she needs a little reschooling and in this case less is most definatly more...a snaffle and a drop noseband is the cure of all ills in old fashioned schooling manuals....I like these type as they rarely resort to gadgets!

teeth check first then throw the gag in the bin buy a nice french link snaffle and restart her from the beginning - adding gadgets will mask the proble for a while but it wont solve it.
It may mean no riding for a month or so while you establish a correct way of going from the ground using longlines and lunging but 90% of ridden problems stem from either pain or lack of knowledge on the part of the horse so re starting will only help.

Agree with all above suggestions. I know you said you were going to get teeth done anyway. Might actually give you some confidence lunging her and long reining as you get to see exactly how she goes.
A running martingale and on the snaffle bit for the time being is what i would do.

I agree with Flea and Maxi
Check the teeth, throw the gag in the bin, (horrendous device) and a running martingale can help too, I do think throwing the head up can have become a habit. You don't have to use the martingale forever, just till she realises that there is no need to throw her head up. I put one on Debbie when I first had her, her teeth were fine but she was a bit of a nervy nellie back then and would throw her head up at every opportunity, I was fed up chewing ears!
After a few months when she really settled into herself and is now a very calm and very brave lady I took it off. She carries her head normally now and I no longer eat ears. Have to sayI found the martingale a bit of a faff but it seemed to me to be the lesser of evil gadgets, like Maxie said all they do is mask a problem, starting from scratch means you get a calm happy horsey.

yeah need to fone up and book her having her teeth done just waiting on mossh to get some money. and i do need to do some ground work with her, but with the few days that i have had her she learns B!oody quick! The first day of putting her in her stable she barged straight to the hay coulnt get her to stand still now she totally ignores the hay when we walk past and stands nicly for a bit then i take her headcollar off and ive only had her a week! it only took her a couple of days to learn so she does want to learn. YO was thinking of trying a hangin cheek on her. But i really dont get why the bad oppions of the gag:S I mean if it works for the horse the so be it. It worked for me old arab! had to put it on the bottom ring but it meant i only had to touch the reins and he'd stop. Which is better than hauling on the mouth! There was no difference with rosie on the second ring to the snaffle bit, also this is slighty different to the one she was previously in as that had the nutcracker action and this one is a lozange so kinda. will try mosshs running martingale so see if it fits *fingers crossed* going tfor a hack round the villiage tomoz with the YO so that will be interesting...

It is great having a new horse, there is also so much getting to know one another to do. I have had Pete for 8 months now and am still experimenting with different things. You will get there and it's fun!

Maybe it was poking into her the mouthpiece. I wouldnt diss a bit but i would definetly start at the bottom and go through all the options before going for a stronger bit. But then again, you can actually tell what will and wont work with your horse, its weird. Like you get a feeling and its because you know their reactions and you know the horse, you know what sort of things might work, you just need a few ideas to start you off.
Funny though, i suggested a bitless bridle for princess to give it a go to my RI but she said whats the point if youre selling her. Dont think my RI is too keen on that sort of thing. I think shes pretty traditional.

i am so please with rosie today! Went for a hack with the Yo on her big 16.2hh irish draught x thoroughbred called ted and bless her she kept up with him even in trot! She was as good as gold even had a tiny canter which i wasnt she bout as didnt knw weather she would pull up after last night of no brakes! but ted went off in to canter and she just trotted then sqeezed her into canter and she just slowly plodded along and pulled up instantly! i put the gag onto the second ring just incase but she was just fine she really surprised me I love her to bits! We went past some scary big blue doors lol and the worst of her spooks is just stepping sideways so i can cope with that and we met a big concrete mixer aswell. She was quite tired by the end and rather sweaty so is being clipped hopefully next thursday, she isnt quite sure of the clippers so might mildly sedate her just for her first time. YO has given me a hangin cheek to try so will have ago schooling her in that and see how she goes. But yeah she didnt put a foot wrong and was super super good <---can ya tell im happy but rather cold

Cool, glad the hack went well. Maybe she was just a bit fresh the other day - but still worth getting a look, which youre gonna do anyway. Thats such a good idea i have to say - i think everyone who gets a horse should do that - so simple and hopefully there would be less riding problems!
