Scunnered but don't really know where I went wrong. It was prelim 10 at Ingliston on Saturday. I had learnt the test thoroughly and had even had a lesson last week with a noted teacher and she had run through it with me. I am not even going to pretend that we did well, Ben is NOT a dressage horse, probably never will be aged 13 but I love him anyway. He wasn't happy from the minute we went into the practice arena, flat back ears, neck like a strung out banana, stiff as a board but when we went in, he behaved well in so far as he made the transitions when I asked, stayed within the arena etc. but no way was he ever on the bit or soft and obedient. Just as we were finishing (canter MXK) I heard a beep, but as I had only to trot up the cetnre line and halt I just ignored it. OH videoed it and I am going to try to get it uploaded to You Tube so you can see, but we didn't wait for our sheet (OH was fed up and wanted to get home) so I have two questions really. 1. Will me sheet still be available from the RC do you think? 2. Does a beep mean disqualification? They seemed quite strict cos a lovely lady I know very slightly told me she had been disqualified for not wearing gloves....mean or what??? I enjoyed it anyway, loved the dressing up bit and will try again. He mightn't like it but he should be able to improve a bit...

well done for giving it a go, and I can totally sympathise with the comment about teh OH mine is exactly the same so I now leave him behind.
The beep could have meant that you have gone wrong and for that you get 2 marks deducted, if you are certain you were right the judge could have hit the car horn by accident... it does happen.
I don't know why you would be disqualified. I never have been and I have ridden an entire test the wrong way around....

Oh i am just pleased if i ride the test and include everything in the right place!! I dont think i have ever ridden a test that is soft and obedient - its usually winging round the place, trying to make it look like im just sitting there, trying to ride into the corners, never really getting any sort of bend, just about getting accurate transitions (i.e. getting started and then getting stopped again!) etc. you get the idea lol!! I suppose you just have to practice LOTS - i never did, i just headed off and went in and rode and then whatever comments i got thats a true reflection of my schooling and riding skills lol! I think everyone should have a go at dressage - i think a lot of people are scared of making a fool of themselves, they dont think their riding is good enough or their horse isnt the 'right type' or it isnt very well schooled etc. lots of reasons. Its practically the only sport you get tips and comments about how you did and then you can work on them in your everyday riding! Its great fun and a day out and i like it because it just involves riding on the flat so no need to worry about having to jump etc. Nice and sedate Plus i do love getting all dressed up ;D And dont even use that as an excuse either that you dont have the right clothes - there always ebay, charity shops and sales! ;D r.e. getting your test. I should think they will have kept it - give them a ring and see if they can post it out. I think a beep usually means you have gone wrong and you need to go back to before you went wrong and have another go - usually it happens if you go the wrong direction or something similar!

Thank you guys. ;D Fi, I think I might be brave enough now to go on my own, but as it is all so brand new to me I needed some moral support, although OH did say "he went like a donkey!!" Which he did but no need to say that was there?? So not much support there then. I emailed the RC sec yesterday and she says she'll post it to me. As you say FB, it would be good to read the comments; they should help for next time!!! OH burned the video to dvd so I could upload it to You Tube here at work, (can't access upload from home) but the "disk is corrupted " or so the PC says..... Stilll trying though.

Blimey I think you were brave to have a go at all - I always battle with my nerves so you are a real inspiration. Do let us know what the buzzer was for - surely it can't be elimination? Anyway, well done both of you or having the balls to have a go. I must keep you in mind when I'm being weedy ......

Well done for having a go and not being put off doing another! I can't think why you would have been eliminated. I know some of these shows can be very strict but usually they're quite relaxed, especially at prelim level. I have known people be eliminated for forgetting to take off brushing boots, their whips too long and for the wrong type of bit. One alse because the horse was very slightly unlevel, although not lame. I'd be very interested to hear what it says on your sheet.

Thank you all... I got the vid on, it's under the video gallery and I wasn't disqualified, there were no errors on my "report", just a series of low marks, top was 5 and the bottom was a 3...poor circles, wrong bend etc but right strike off and his canter on the left rein was described as obedient!!! I am so proud of him... And I got 4 out of 20 for riders aids and effectiveness!!! So all to play for.....

Thats great youre getting out there. Im so pleased for you! Now you can school away and practice where you went wrong Sounds like it was marked quite hard. On mine i got 6s for wobbly circles, but i suppose it all depends on the judges. Anyway, well done!

Lucky you didn't leave the arena then! They may seem low scores but you have to look at what went before you and how the judge was scoring on the day. You can look at the comments now and got through working on things. Don't forget that the test was probably a mirror image with most things done on both reins so it's not really as much as it seems. Keep reminding yourself of the positve comments too. Onwards and .....onwards. Not Upwards - never upwards in a dressage test!!

Just watched your vid and what a stunning horse, very forward and relaxed, your position looks excellent to me too. I can only hope to be brave enough to have a go some day, well done for getting out there, i think he is great.
