for the last few days Brave has had a bit of a snotty nose and a cough, he has often coughed after being kept in overnight but after a couple he seems to have cleared any dust and that's him for the day.
However in the last couple of days he has coughed as I have been bringing him in from the field and on Wednesday when we went for a gallop up the stubble field about after about 3/4 of the field he had a big coughing fit with his nose on the ground (almost) but he also didn't want to pull up back to walk either.
He is not off his feed and is as keen on that as ever but possibly is slightly quieter than usual, but on the other hand he has been finally relaxing over the last couple of months so I have been weaning him (or me?) off his calmer.
Its slightly odd as some mornings/evenings he has had a runny nose and cough and others he hasn't so I cant definitavley say is only after he has been in, and therefore its dust or its a cold because its there all the time. So I think I will keep an eye on him for a few more days and do just some gentle exercise over the weekend and see how he is.

Could just be upper respiritory infection just like us i guess they get colds. If he is fine in a few days all is well. There are a million supplements for airways if he is in the need, wonder if it a coincidence that the calmer is no longer in his system?

Is the runny nose just a clear fluid or is it a yellow discharge? If it's just clear then I wouldn't normally be too concerned. If he's himself in every other way then could just be a slight chill or dust cough. If its yellow, or thick white discharge then I would get the vet to take a look as would indicate an infection somewhere which would need some antibiotics. Have you taken his temperature?

Scatty the snot varies from clear to white, I was planning on taking his temperature this afternoon when I bring them in just to be on the safe side.
I have had 2 stupidly long working days this week (one of which broke my record at 20.5 hours) and the other was 14.5 hours so haven't had much time to do anything with the horses this week at all.

Ouch that is mammouth hours. I would take his temperature, see how that is, then see how he is by the beginning of next week. If he's still producing white snot I would call the vet to have a look. Keep him warm in case it is a chill. Hope he's OK. He sounds like he's feeling fine in himself which is good.

Could be a number of things Fi- sounds a bit virusy to me esp that he is a bit quieter, until you find out take it really steady with him, maybe give him a few days off- never push a cough!

I have to admit I didn't take his temperature as there was no sign of snotty nose or cough last night and no snotty nose this morning either though he did a a quick cough when I turned him out and no snot this afternoon when I brought him in, so I think he may have had a bit of a cold.

Mattie had a cold when I moved him to his new yard and he was a bit snotty and had a bit of a cough. I just kept an eye on him and fed him some of his fave foods and he was soon right as rain!
If the cough continues, try feeding honey as it soothes the throat or something. It worked for Mattie once, unforunately he doesn't like honey so I spent 5 minutes trying to get it down his neck lol
