Rather than earning points you have prize money. Since different venues have different prize money, the BSJA have notional winnings - so a 1st at novice is worth x and a 1st at discovery is worth y etc so people are comparable no matter what venues they have competed at. If you look at adverts for showjumpers they will say "Winnings BSJA £x actual and £y notional". Actual winnings are generally bigger that the notional as this value is just for comparison of horses and deciding their level. You can jump whatever you fancy, but if your horse has over a certain amount of notional winnings you'll have "jumped out" of the lower level and have to move up. You can still enter that lower level in the open class though. Does that help?

yes, if you win too much to be allowed in that class you can enter at open.
But to be jumped out of novice you have to win quite a bit so you'd surely be capable of discovery.
TBH I wouldn't go out jumping BN unless I was schooling over 1m at least at home anyway as the BN jumps will go up to that in the jump off. I didn't enter Zoon at BN until we were happily winning over 1m/1.10m unaffiliated comps as the courses are more technical and up to height affiliated so there is a big jump. Just beacause you can manage 90cm unaffiliated certainly doesn't mean you can manage affilated BN where the spreads can be 1m wide, everything is up to height and the courses ask a lot mroe questions than your local show.
What are you jumping at the moment perfetpony? Will it be juniors you go into?

no, im into eventing and previously was in the under 21 bd team, i was at hoys and just wondered how the show jumping classes worked? thought it would be same sought of set up! we have just finished for the year really just been training this year as got 2 sprogles and needed to get back into competative riding! they are 2 and 1 so next year should be ready! wendy is very bold at xc and dressage is ok, just struggling with showjumps stopping up but i think most eventers struggle with that, just keep working her on flat to improve between fences! so whatch this space! x
