Taken from fimacg's post where she mentioned Dexter peeing for Scotland. Bob pees for England. On Friday I put two bales of woodchip in and I have just managed to eke out his bed so I won't have to put another in 'til tomorrow! That'll be three bales in five days!! It's costing me a small fortune. He has always been rather wet and I've always thought he saves it for the stable rather than going in the field but this seems excessive. Any ideas? He doesn't have a salt lick btw.

wow thats a lot of bedding to have to buy! Do you deep litter or remove all the wet everyday? A possibly cheaper alternative (but not solution) could be to put a bale of shavings as a base under a straw bed. Then you could clean the whole bed daily but leave the shavings down maybe weekly.

I know a horse who pees for France! There's nothing wrong with him, apparently, he just does.
Have you tried pelleted wood for his bedding? It is mega absorbent - much much more so than shavings - and works best on the deep litter system. It's expensive per bag but it lasts forever. We did a proper costing over time and found it worked out quite well - and if you factor in your time there is no comparison.

This is what I use for all of mine, although as they have rubber matting I don't deep litter, Dexter gets 1 -2 bags a week but it means his bed is always fresh, and only enough to absorb the pee.

I don't have this problem!!! It is lovely to be able to say that for a change! . I wonder- are you making your beds just a tad too lush and comfortable for your boys ie making it more attractive for them to hold it in and wait for the nice absorbant bed rather than having it splash around outside? Just a thought?

Just a thought? I do make his bed nice and deep for him but he's always preferred to drink outside rather than in the stable. He hates splashing himself so he scrapes a nice big pile of chippings under him first! I do try and catch it when he first comes in but once he sees that bucket he stops. Rac & fi, I haven't tried pelleted wood, so that's another alternative I can look at. Can you suggest any brand names? I may also look at getting some rubber matting too. I daren't deep litter because when he scrapes the chippings under him he just churns up all the wet and the whole bed goes! Aarrgghh!!

Sorry Flo, I don't know any UK brands.....
But don't immediately discount deep litter - one of the club mares was a real bed digger but she never did on wood deep litter - it seems to get quite solid underneath, which it has to, to work well. In fact, I don't know that the stuff the club uses would work as well on rubber matting as it takes a few days to fluff up. We used to just fling in about 10 bags on bare concrete and that would puff up enormously. Sometimes we would top up after a few weeks but not necessarily.
I can't tell you how much of a joy it was: I've mucked out eight boxes over quite a few years and we have tried straw, hemp, flax, shavings and pelleted wood. The wood is sooooooooo easy to skip out (it just runs through the tines of a fork) and I could do a good job on all eight boxes in half an hour.

Thanks. i have tried deep litter and it just didn't work. I'm going to have a look at the wood pellets as tha's something I haven't tried yet. I can't have straw, I've tried several brands of wood chip and I've tried Aubiose and hemp.

Straw would be no good at all, i agree florence! I dont suppose having a shavings base and a straw top would make much difference - would probably make the place messier... plus 2 different bedding - oh too complicated!!
i hope the wood pellets work.
