My Mum has just called in and told me that a horse was killed round the corner from her house this morning. Apparently 2 girls were riding along a quiet lane when one horse "bolted" onto the busier road at the end. One horse was destroyed, the other is injured and both girls are in hospital. It is so sad but a timely reminder that our "sport" is dangerous and we must all take care Zxx

OMG I hate hearing things like that. The other day our livery girl said that her best mate from her old yard had phoned to say that her horse had died during the night. Only 11 years old from heart attack in his field. He was perfectly healthy and it was just so unexpected! Poor girl is devastated!

thats so terrible, last year near here there was a young mother and 6 year old daughter killed whilst out with a friend and pony. The pony died aswell but the other people were alright. Its so tradgic. Hit by some young man in a peugeot who'll probably get a £60 fine and a slap on the wrists.

When the accident happened at home, the three horses bolted (proper bolt) down 3 main roads - one leads direct to M1, another is a very busy and fast bypass, and the other is a very busy road which leads from the city to the other towns. We were very lucky that neither of ours were hurt.

thats awful. a couple of months ago we hacked past a lady trotting this horse round, we only ever walk on roads usually (to save joints) and our lanes are alwyas very quiet, but apparently this lady's horse had a heart attack and died in a ditch at the side of the road where we had just been. the horse was in its 20's and she was hitting it, even though it had a good sweat on and was puffing.
that horse could have lived much longer than it did, its such a waste, although i suppose horses are flight or fight anials, and this accident coulnt really have been helped. x

Sorry to drag this up but just found out a few mins ago I was rather friendly with one of the girls involved a few years back. We kept our horses at same yard and went out a bit. Think she is okay but hers is one of the horses that had to be destroyed (she had owned it since a foal or yearling...I forget now but remember her well). It seems she and a friend were the two coming the other way who ended up involved when the other horse bolted towards them. There are also now reports that the other horse was shot at causing it to bolt in the manner it did.
I am shocked rigid....it was horrific enough before and now I know someone involved it's too awful for words.

There are lads of "rumours" knocking about, if I hear anything that resembles the truth I'll let you know. My Mum is really upset about it said that the house on corner of Middle Lane and stphen Lane had it's garden wall demolished. Just awful Z

Thanks zara, what bits I have heard came from my dad talking to girl involved dad earlier. My mum noticed one of her horses missing from field but thought it was just out each time she has passed as no one seemed to know who was involved.

Sorry bringing it up again, mainly for Zara and anyone else localish.
Apparently the horse that bolted suffered a brain haemorrhage a post mortem has showed. This is pretty reliable as has come (okay albeit third hand from my mum) but from someone who knows the person and has visited her in hospital.

These poor people have my deepest sympathy. We lost a horse about 5 years ago when it bolted from the school, galloped down the drive after the horses that had gone hacking and galloped staight under a tractor.
I will never forget how sick i felt when i came running down the drive to find him down on the road. There were no outward injurys but there was clearly something seriously wrong with the horse and i had to sit on him to keep him down whilst we waited for the vet. The vet took one look at the horses gums and recommended shooting him there and then due to the internal injurys.
It turned out that the force of the accident had ruptured the horses Aorta away from his heart and he was literally drowining in his own blood. It was horrific.
I also felt so sorry for the driver of the tractor as he had done nothing wrong - it was literally one horrific accident where circumstances came together resulting in such a bad crash. The only thing i can ever be gratefull for is the fact that the horse hit a tractor and not a car. I think if it had been a car, it would be unlilely that the person driving would have walked away.
Most people were so helpfull, but i will never forget that there was this one selfish cow who refused to go round the block (which would have taken her and extra 5 minutes) and drove past the blockade that some pedestrians were doing, drove up and then asked me whilst i tried to pin this horse down to move some bins that were out so that she could drive past. For F**ks sake, the horse is lying in the middle of the road dying and you want to drive a car 2 ft past its head?!! I was so shocked, that I just did what she asked. I knew the horse was seriousley ill when the car drove past his face and he did not move. Some people have no clue and should be banned from the countryside.

This is an absolute tragedy. I'll just take the opportunity to remind us all to be wear fluorescent safety gear when out riding. Maybe we could do piccies in our bright and yellows.
