We got one for Kieran and he licks away at it like its molasses - eyes shut and everything! I never would have expected him to need it - and apparently they only take it if they need it - as we dont work him hard so it surprised me that hes into it like a days work. I would recommend everyone getting one for their horses and theyre only a couple of pounds.

as you dont allow him any turn out it is hard for him to get all the nutrients that his body requires so he the fact he is lacking in salt is not that surprising- its not only linked to sweating.

Well, there are plenty of horses stabled all the time and not allowed out at grass. He gets feed and hay.

I have heard you can overload them with minerals though if theyre already getting feed.

if a mammal's liver and kidneys are working effectively they cannot get overloaded with vitamins and minerls as mammals excrete what they cannot use. AJ will not go any where near a salt lick, looks at me as if I am trying to poison him! A good balanced diet and a natural life is what is required Zx

LOL Zara Sancy's the same - she wrinkles her nose up and looks thoroghly offended. Mind I'm surprised as we bought a mint Lickit for her and Myric (more for something to keep them occupied) and it's still hanging in the stable untouched. My old horse used to virtually eat hers whole!

mine have them in their stables, Chompy hardly touches his, Brave likes it but Dexter devours his, but he also pees for Scotland too and I have thought about taking it out for that reason, but I read somewhere neurogical conditions can effect mineral intake so I want to speak to the vets about it next time they come out on a routine visit so in the meantime I put up with a flooded stable every morning.

Mine have access to both. R just loves the salt and until recently they both boycotted the carrot-flavoured mineral lick but have started to go for it recently. Not that they need it - R is off work completely with his teeth and P is in a holding pattern of light work. I suppose the salt is necessary here and since they are on forage-only, a mineral block can't hurt.

Mine both have access to various salt and mineral licks (they like the pink himalayian one best - mind you I had a lick when it was new and it is nice!) as they too are on foarage only diets.
Their intake varies from month to month and only use them when they need to I guess. On the other hand they eat the lickit ones and Harry especially devours anything molassed so the horselyx are pretty much out apart from special treats.
